I am a staff member for another metal webzine. We have annual music awards - for various genre categories. There was a “Metalgaze” category for years. We dropped it in 2017. There just wasn’t enough interest. The music has because so monotonous, boring and predictable. There are only so many independent one-man band projects on bandcamp one can listen to. I will check this, but not with high hopes. Excellent review and thanks.

Except many fans will say it's the emotional connection that makes it so special. We've heard blackgaze before, but it's never felt like this.

i mean i came here to say "this is very good" and leave it at that but your comment just gave me a good chuckle. in any case i'm bored so i'll bite.
sunbather isn't remembered whatsoever for its production values and that's because it's of the least remarkable elements about it. it's as cleanly produced as possible to allow the instrumentation to be as discernible as can be, rather than revelling in any texturally interesting or divergent passages if you ignore the ambient/noise interludes. in fact i'd question at all that it has much in the way of shoegaze, instead having much more in common with hardcore and post-rock. you could raise the argument that shoegaze influenced post-rock but it doesn't make your statement any less tenuous.
if you want to know what sunbather is remembered for just read one of the many reviews. whether you consider it hyperbole or not is up to you, but saying it's the production values that it's remembered for is unfounded and i cannot see any comparison point between the two. as for loveless, well, that album did have a very specific production style and is part of a genre in which the texture of a sound is one of the most important elements in conveying the track, so i wouldn't criticize you too much in saying production is one of its most memorable elements. sunbather, though? no.
