Okay I get you. Like saying Ac/Dc songs are great because the have the how to on 4/4 three chords s off the pentatonic....

I mean Thunderstruck is awesome, doesn’t matter how much simple songwriting is involved :]

Take it with a grain of salt, but Priest’s eighteenth record is the best thing the band has done in *decades.

Considering their previous album was already 4 years ago, I think you should put a little more emphasis there. Just nitpicking of course :P

m/ Priest reign supreme.

Who will join me in a full discog marathon? I've never actually sat through all of Nostradamus and Demolition.

This is definitely better than Redeemer and Nostradamus and possibly better than Angel. Damn

Well i dug that discussion nocte. I also think you start to trully enjoy music when you stop thinking technically. Also the 99% of people can give important inputs about overall aesthetics, feelings and sensations. They re all equal parts of what music is about. All these last factors are also subjective.

Nice effort on the review, but there's too much discussion about Priest getting OLD (which is just depressing) and not enough about why this is their best album years? What about the songs?

parksungjoon “like i respect when someone much more knowledgeable than me goes "well actually this popular song is genuinely good and here are some factual details of music theory that it uses to great effect which make it catchy and yadda yadda" but that still doesnt mean i give two shits about the song”

I agree with you there. If the song doesn’t make you feel anything, then what does it really matter what the theory behind it is?! That said, music theory just provides another layer of understanding which may be helpful in realizing the artist’s intent, even if they may be unconscious on their part. This stuff is more relevant to musicians who use this information in order to learn some kind of lesson from the song. OR it can be used by know-it-all’s to declare their self importance. Yeah, there’s plenty of that going around too.

parksungjoon: “but yea my point was more that in other hobbies people try really hard to use facts to justify their shitty opinions, and often times they end up being literally, objectively, demonstrably wrong with the things they say”

And regardless of how hard you try, you’ll probably never convince them to see things any differently. Some people have to be right, even when they’re plainly wrong. Some people talk just to hear themselves talk, but aren’t capable of listening. When I encounter people like that I usually (1) devalue their opinion and (2) find someone else to talk to. Not all humans are this annoying, but I agree that there are way too many people like that.

Not a bad question. I made assumptions that being 18 albums in without changing the band’s soundscapes there was little to no reason to tell people what they already know. I mentioned that this particular album brings back the bamd’s Peak back in the 80s (which is why this record is awesome). I did touch on a couple of tracks to help gauge overall theme and quality. I’m not about to start giving song play by plays, especially if the record is streaming/released.

Great review Nocte! I've always been more of the Maiden family than of the Priest but there is no doubt this blends perfectly their classic sound with modern Priest. Not so easy to do that after 49 years and 18 albums.

tl;dr I should bump this.
