Good review, my man. I listened to a few songs and yeah it's pretty good. Pretty moody stuff, hope this guy's alright. No idea what slowcore is and call me crazy, but I always thought -core subgenres had some fusion of hardcore punk hence the name, no?

@Dungeonboy: Yeah, it’s a pretty personal album but I’m pretty sure Kyle Bates is doing alright right now. His post on the band’s FB page on the album’s release date would imply that although he has his personal struggles (I think we all have some to different degrees) music’s helping him be in a much better place than he was prior to the circumstances that led to the album.
As for the question about “core” genres, I’m not really sure about the origins of the usage of the word “core” within music genres but I do understand why you’d be confused. The word does seem to apply to genres that fuse hardcore punk most of the time. FWIW, Mark Kozelek’s music is often tagged as “sadcore” which wouldn’t be far too off IMO cause both his stuff and this give me similar vibes/moods.

no idea what the origin is exactly as far as the etymology goes. there's plenty of electronic music that uses the -core suffix as well so it doesn't really seem limited to hardcore variants. shrug. some journalist probably coined it a long time ago and the term survived.
