I saw them live on their False Priest run a few times and dug into their back catalogue after that release and still keep up with their new releases. They really are hit or miss though with some stuff being completely off the wall. This review is very wordy and didn’t need to be so long, but it’s still well written.

Fauna is best, but Stalks is like of Montreal deconstructed with Kishi Bashi in the mix and I ADORE it
This is my fav release since Stalks too, I think. He's just gotten so bitter and cynical and it comes through in a really on-point way on this lol like these synths dgaf about you. "Not alooooooot"

cynical flat beat disco with horns is my aesthetic

Fauna is way overrated to me. I find it very boring in a lot of ways. Paralytic Stalks is probably their best record in this decade. Although, I actually prefer their earlier work. This album is ok in parts but there isn't much to it. It sounds like a Kevin Barnes solo project. Which people seem to enjoy here, but I actually would prefer more of a band effort. Maybe I'm wrong and the band were very involved, might look into it. If they were, it doesn't sound like it.

Kevin Barnes said that the recording process for this record differs from his last handful pretty greatly. His last few were full band efforts while this record was a lot of solo work and doing one on one sessions with instrumentalists and producers to get the album to the sound the way he wanted. Which is kinda what he did for Sunlandic Twins to Paralytic Stalks.

Nvm this is shit

Really? Paralytic Stalks sounds super full though and band-like. Especially with the drumming and pianos on that record.
The reason I mentioned it is because he said ''We're SO excited to share that our new album, White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood''
Makes it sound like a whole band. I'm pretty sure this band actually used to have a load of members. Maybe they still do. I remember them having a load of people on stage live.

satanic panic is so good
the first album i heard by them, and arguably the best.
sunlandic twins, hissing fauna and lousy with sylvanbriar are really close too.

@eons, I could be wrong about paralytic stalks. I assume every record from that period was more solo than full band. As for how this album was recorded, I sourced it from a write up he did regarding why he made the album and what he was inspired by. Idk why he refers to it as a full band effort.

This is surprisingly good, on first impression it sounds relatively focused & concise, more so that I was expecting.
I don't listen to it much anymore but Hissing Fauna was my jam & False Priest certainly had it's moments.
Think I like this guy best when he concentrates on hooks & streamlines his song-writing a little whilst still keeping his core 'sound' & this definitely appears like it could be a winner in that regard.

Undeniably solid, but not seeing what's amazing about this.
Still though, it's a consistent album and better than I would've expected from Of Montreal in 2018.

legit all my favourite of montreal albums, probably in that order too.

I’ve definitely got my eye on a few of these albums I haven’t heard.

I’ve heard this 4 times today & my views are definitely closer to the reviewer’s than the users in the comments. Album is so infectious, throws you some interesting curveballs but never overdoes it, in fact there’s very little fat on this, nice & trim.

i think this album needs a couple listens to sink into
when i started off my review it was a write up for a 3 and by the end of it after a lot more listens and found itself near a 5

Yeah, I liked it almost immediately but the 3rd & 4th listen was definitely stronger, so it’s improving with time so far. I hope people don’t readily dismiss this on first attempt, as is often the case with new releases these days.
I accept this won’t be for everyone though, it’s likely to rub certain personalities up the wrong way.

I've heard this many times at this point since I'm a big Of Montreal fan. The songs are competently written, but not as infectious or fresh as Of Montreal's peak material. It's enjoyable, but doesn't jump off the page for me beyond that. Like in a few months time I doubt anyone will be talking about this album in the same breath as something like Hissing Fauna.
