“why is this considered so culturally significant?”
it’s a relic of a period of Iran that doesn’t exist anymore thanks to the Iranian revolution. xenakis was commissioned to make it to celebrate the 2500th anniversary of persepolis (which would have been in 1971). the festival where it was performed - which was a gathering of the who's-who of comparable composers at the time - had to be cancelled due to the incoming theocracy at the time. it's about as culturally significant as any piece of music that comes to mind atm. some historians also think that the anniversary was partly to blame for how the revolution played out, but i'm not really equipped to say whether or not that's accurate. but anyhoo

this is so damn good. very challenging, but rewarding as hell if you can get in the right headspace for it.

'let alone one that's enjoyable to listen to beyond the "oooh yeah am i smart yet"
Why do ppl always say this when they don't understand a piece of music smh

Somebody trashing him in this thread? Seriously? this guy was a genius. I mean he literally used mathematical theories in his art. He created music for architecture and designs. He was an architect, musician and engineer. Pretty skilled dude.

Yep. My favorite composer ever, although I don't love this one as much as his other works.
Also, thanks for the book. Been looking for it lately.
