oof 182 minutes. heh
is that supposed to be a bust of nero on the cover?

See, I don't think it's necessarily an attention span thing. The longer an album is, the more space that needs to be filled. The more space required, the more ideas and material you need, which always runs the risk of becoming stale over time and exhausting concepts. Movies are susceptible to the same dilemma. Simply put, it's easier to color in a piece of computer paper than a 12ft. X 12ft. canvas if yaknowwhatimsayin
I also have never heard these guys before and I don't think this is the proper record to enter on

Very good point. To me, this has its fair share of good ideas. Are they enough to keep my attention for 182 minutes without doing anything at all? No and there is a real danger of this album becoming background noise for a lot of listeners i.e. while working, studying, etc. which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But at the same time, I feel that a lot of people are focusing a bit too much on the running time trying to see whether it is justified by the number of ideas which is reasonable, but they miss the good moments that the album has.

The only album where it really feels like they treated both metal and classical equally was Theli.
Agreed.
I still regret not catching the band when it toured for that album.
For the new album, I reckon its duration would not be such a thing, if I read the lyrics while I listened to the music.

I'm always down for some good Therion, but this average is downright discouraging lol

27 character roles, 15 vocalists, 46 tracks and 182 minutes of running time.
Good god does that sound awful.

I imagine it would be.

It would be awesome if it was done by a band with the ability to pull it off. The average Therion album is a chore to get through with too few good ideas even at normal length... that's the problem here.

Yeah, Therion is generally a band of great songs, but so-so albums. Even their best albums have moments you wish weren't there

Great review. On one hand this sounds like it would be a an epic journey, on the other hand I'm too cynical to believe it's not instead going to be 3 hours of streeeeetched ideas, but hell if I have time I'll try and confirm which it is.

Thanks, Scuro! This was my mentality more or less so I completely understand. What worked for me, was that I initially listened to a few tracks, then each Act individually, and lastly the whole thing so that might help you.

Sweet review, thanks. I really admire these ambitious projects that give no fucks about standards (see Ayreon).
Now to listen to the actual music.

Agreed Eg. I read a Christofer Johnsson interview a while ago and his mentality was more or less the one you described. He was like, we are not fashionable anymore and people have moved from symphonic metal because it's not the '90s anymore. So, let me release this thing now and people will at least notice and comment on it because of its running time.

Fuck yes m/

Not a bad idea at all, I'll give it a shot

Hope you enjoy, dude. Love your dig too.

Ok, this doesn't seem a good album to start checking this band out. Some of the songs I've listened weren't my cup of tea at all... 3 hours is pretty ambitious anyway

This is definitely not a good album to start checking this band out. You may want to check Beyond Sanctorum if you want to check their death metal era, Theli which is a nice balance of their metal and symphonic elements, or Vovin which is their best symphonic album imo.
|
| |
Yeah, I tried out few songs from Theli. Didn't like it very much either. I'll try to remember to check their dm era though, thanks
But yeah that 3 hour length, it was still quite a surprise I must say...
