‘The harsher edge of Xiu Xiu seems to split opinion a lot cc: Girl With Basket of Fruit‘
I guess you mean thematically, because musically it’s actually quite tame to me. Experimental, confusing or downright odd, yeah sure. Eerie? Perhaps if the concept grabs you. Harsh? Nope.
I’m still almost as puzzled by that one as on release.

idk man this would be pretty abrasive for someone like my mom

I was talking about ‘Basket’ which in the grand scheme of their discog doesn’t seem overly abrasive, just dark/eerie possibly. Yeah this would be abrasive to a lot of people, it’s funny how you can become conditioned to handle it after a while.

Fair, I suppose I meant stuff that approached the sound more from a noise place, and leaving out almost all the melodic stuff, those two things are always on a spectrum for the Xiu, feel like GwBoF and Angel Guts are pretty far to one side of the spectrum, Forget/Dear God at the other extreme

| |
Basket definitely isn't their most abrasive or out there album, I would even say Angel Guts goes further.

What've you checked so far and what's your impression been?

the latest. i enjoyed it but it but the experience as a whole was a bit formless and i wasn't really sure what to make of the group. hoping that checking a bit more of their shizz can help me get a better impression

Could honestly listen to nothing but Hives Hives and Suha until I die

Bumping this into top 100-ish territory, unwaveringly consistent and often quite special indeed. 'Hives' ^ (2) is definitely a highlight.
I know this is (very) late but this should help with your 'formless' issues Ledd. This and The Air Force are both well defined/structured for the most part, although tAF does deviate off course down seemingly contradictory tangents on a track-by-track basis, whereas this is a smoother/more consistent album experience. I suggest that listening to both would give you a decent perspective as to what these guys are about, at least from their noisier side. If you don't want noisy then Fabulous Muscles or Forget might be better (I trust you to make the right choice).

This does such a great job of being v pretty when you listen through all the noiz and Jaime hitting on people’s excavated skull plates and things

Very pretty. I'm really surprised how smoothly this went down last night, I was almost disappointed it wasn't more shocking/obtrusive (thankfully not though). A world away from when I first checked this all those years ago. Perspective/context/timing is everything.
