This album has a perfect blend of brutality and melody imo.
I'd consider this and their other albums essential for mdm fans, but they definitely appeal to dm fans in general, even if they don't typically enjoy mdm.

Maybe I'm just too indebted to the Dark Tranquillity/Be'lakor/Insomnium/In Flames side of melodeath to see it.

DT and Insomnium are two of my favorite mdm bands. Be'lakor is cool, just not quite up there with the others imo. IF has some classic stuff too, but DT easily in my top 3.
But I just don't think favoring those bands would preclude you from liking this. Maybe if IF was the only mdm you liked, and you didn't like dm beyond albums like Symbolic lol, but other than that idk. More likely that it's just not your cup of tea for whatever reason. I mean, some mdm fans don't like The Gallery. Just depends.
