hope she capitalises on the momentum from this and releases a full length in 2018. this is def the best EP of last year and shes probably the most exciting new pop artist currently
|
| |
She doesn't have to rush a full-length this year. She can nab a few features or drop a few singles to maintain her brand for a 2019 debut.

not even on the top 200 eps list but yeah hopefully she releases an lp in '18 that lives up to her potential

she should take more time to learn how to sing. her singing is seriously aimless and sounds improvised in a horrible way

ill admit the aspect that makes Tunnel Vision such a success compared to everything else here really isn't her singing as much as it is the production. any decent pop singer could work with a track like that and it would sound great.

the production makes this whole album and it's still trite american pop worship without knowing what made 80's pop great or how to mock it with aimless warbling over it. The producer has promise though.

but for real, the production MAKES this, yes, but the songs are really fun and who cares if Rina doesn't have the best voice ever, she doesn't detract from the catchiness of the tunes, and that's the only thing that a pop tune needs, really.
Otherwise, every The Voice winner would have a successful career. In pop it's songwriting and excecution > individual talent.

yeah I like kyary pamyu pamyu and she has a terrible voice but she has loads of charm and the production is always killer and her vocals are precisely guided as written by the producer. it's kinda a similar case with this but on a smaller scale and the catchiness of the songs doesn't shine through for me. she's gotta come up with some personal touches to stand out as a vocalist.

i think kyrary pampyu pamyu is uninteresting af lol. Now i get why you don't like this.
Probably you don't dig Kero Kero Bonito much, either.

"but the songs are really fun and who cares if Rina doesn't have the best voice ever, she doesn't detract from the catchiness of the tunes, and that's the only thing that a pop tune needs, really."
i disagree, these qualifiers set a pretty low bar for any genre

"In pop it's songwriting and excecution > individual talent."
your argument for why this is good is that its ok that she's not very talented because pop music
but this quote isn't the rule its just the standard. not a very good standard at that.

i mean if you want to accept at face value that pop music is just marketed pandering sure, but there are plenty of examples of pop music that don't revolve around narcissism and thats where most of the actually good pop is tbh. in fact we live in a really exciting time for pop music imo.

what i meant was she doesn't need to be a very talented singer to pull off a good pop tune if the songwriting and production are tite and well done, I think she does a good job and that she has a good voice for it. She just needs to not detract from the songs themselves. I'm saying that i like the songs and the production very much and couldn't care less if she's a 'talented' singer or not.
Don't see how this revolves around narcissism, tho.

at least this album draws inspiration from the good aspects of pop and not the bottom of the barrel modern stuff. pop in decades past was quality music. why is now a particularly interesting time for pop though? I have a really hard time finding any pop that stands out in any way and has zero millennial whoops in it. it only seems to be getting more simplistic, lazy, and formulaic with every passing year and people are putting up less of a fight over demanding quality and uniqueness.

i guess i could agree more with that if Tunnel Vision wasn't the only track thats actually really worth talking about production-wise i guess.
Don't see how this revolves around narcissism, tho.
doesnt necessarily revolve around it but pop music that prioritizes an average or decent singer with a marketable image over a person thats actually a talented musician to be the public figure for someone else's songwriting and production comes off as at least aware of the narcissism component to their industry if not just flat-out abusing it and it isn't an area of pop that i'm very interested in.

why is now a particularly interesting time for pop though?
because for the first time since the 80s is pop embracing influences outside of the mainstream and altering the etymology of the term for the better imo. that and the evolution of hypagognic pop which i think is kind of a brilliant form of counter-culture.
