I actually genuinely like Ain't It Funny. It's like the sonic equivalent of the boat ride in the willy wonka movie

Nah no record scratching after what you said. I couldn't have put it better to be honest.

Feel like this should have been a longer review so you could flesh out your thesis a bit more, as currently it feels somewhat half backed and insubstantial. As has been mentioned, your take on the lyricism seems unfairly face value, reductive and ignores the context of the record. And to say the production and beats are abstract for the sake of it seems untenable imo, given how their messy and often sinister air links with the self-destructive "downward spiral" themes. Still, a voice of dissent is always welcome, I just think you could have elaborated a bit more as I don't really get your stance.

My main argument is that it's bad music (as in, it's not pleasing to the ears) and hard for a casual listener like myself to enjoy. I also realize that Danny Brown is trying to be so wild and left-field that he discourages people from following his path, but once again, I think that's a half-assed approach to talking about serious issues like drug abuse. I know the context. I just hate the methodology. The beats sound like scores for mediocre horror films. I don't like the album, and it has nothing to do with me not getting it.

"I also realize that Danny Brown is trying to be so wild and left-field that he discourages people from following his path"
Nah, he's like Jared Leto trying to dress himself. He carefully calculates every piece to try to be obscure while aiming for mainstream acceptance.

God, like I seriously hate when people say that. "You're taking it too much at face value!" Appearances matter. I refuse to give him a pass for his dumb lines about pussy just because there's a "deeper" meaning within them.

The deeper meaning that he enjoys good vagina?

Probably not anymore, but most guys have to pay for it in some form or another.

i think the conclusion is maybe danny brown is not for the casual hip hop fan. just like black metal aint for the casual metal listener. also is danny brown an independent artist? the term indie has lost all meaning.
