Boy isn't underrated, I've heard songs from that album on the radio throughout my life just as much as their other 80s and 90s stuff.

I like Red Flag Day, that's about it. Some of the lyrics on this are terrible.

i think this is a good album. it sounds like an album made with focus and direction. its a pop album for sure. U2 has become a good pop band. i figure this is Edge's influence for the most part as he writes the music. i like that he is not relying on a "U2 sound" for this album. such as Beautiful Day.

i think Bono's lyrics are good here. reflective and wise somehow. songs of experience is a good title. it takes a bit of experience to appreciate an album of reflection such as this. if you lack it, you may not appreciate this album as much

i think the reviewer mentions trying to rope in "the college crowd" with some of this stuff om the album. well, i doubt that....

william blake and allen gindsberg? they were never rock n roll.....

"I think Bono's lyrics are good here"

Dude American Soul is awful. I can't think of many things more cringe-inducing than Bono shouting "YOU ARE ROCK AND ROLL" into a megaphone.

Is there anything on here that rivals the best songs on the album 'War'?

gonna change my rating to a 4

this album is good. better than many critics give it credit for. it will seep in if given chance

someone asked if any song on here is as good as any on War? sure, i would say. they just sound different. but the album is full of good songs and melodies well recorded and lyrically asture

it is not without cliche or completely original or a throwback to the glory days. its U2 now and its really good to hear. the album makes sense from end to end as an....album of songs

the last two tracks are great close out songs for the entire recording. this album will be remembered as U2's first album all over again. or as bono sings in one song here "when you think you're done / you have just begun"

songs of experience

"this album will be remembered as U2's first album all over again"

Not sure exactly what you're trying to say here, but outside of recency bias...no it will not. No critics are going to be putting this up on the same level as their debut. No song on this album will ever remotely be remembered as fondly as "I Will Follow".

I Will Follow > This entire album. Even the good songs are frankly kind of shit compared to their work in the 80s.

boy is nowhere near U2's best album. i will follow is great single. but boy is just a start. its something U2 still is,of course. but it is a half realized album tbh. a band still searching for what they found on War and The Unforgettable Fire. which all lead to the Joshua Tree and history

i don't think boy was really highly praised by critics when it first came out. but comparisons aside if this were a new album by new band most would be praising the hell out of it and the band. but because its U2 peeps are like "yawn"

good music is good music. no matter what came before or the history of the band

this is their best album since All That You Can't Leave Behind

Landlady is better then many songs on the first three albums. these are better songs then many from U2's 80's stuff. real songs, here.

i mean im more likely to forgive u2 for mediocrity considering i like all but three albums from them, and theyre scattered all throughout their discography. but this would probably be even more mediocre if it was released by a different band because theres just nothing interesting about it

subtlety. think subtlety. and i don't mean to put a spin or excuse aging in rock 'n roll

but this is a good album. a grand one, even. not as in the past for the band, but in the now. not grasping as with innocence. but its the sound of a band settled in, but not settled. thats why i stated before its like a new first album for the group. imo they have turned a corner here that at least on record will not see them go back. and it makes me look forward to what is next

if a fan of the group, and we are millions, its a good time to look forward

i find much to look forward to here. the nostalgia may always be in the live shows, but any band should be this good in the studio. bring the songs, the lesser ones, too. and make a real album from it

i really like this from start to finish. innocence was too refined. this? imperfectly so

I disagree that this is their best since All That You Can't Leave Behind. I thought How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was way better than this. I haven't been able to enjoy much out of U2's last three albums and I have a big nostalgic attachment to the band.

I also disagree that people would be raving about this if it was by someone who wasn't U2.

U2 died with pop which is their last great album, surprisingly how to dismantle took me for surprise and it's an incredible album but all albums since 2000 have been dissapointing.

I like everything except october, innocence, and most of rattle and hum. I didnt even dislike this there’s just nothing really all that special about it

i like most of everything, too. but october as you said (can not listen to it much without skipping around) and.....i like most other things from the band. unforgettable fire has issues for me starting at "side two,' some rattle and hum tracks are suspect, War has not held up altogether over time, and innocence imo was transitional to this album. which i now cannot stop listening to. for now....

its interesting you mention that. it is my fave of the first four albums and is still one of my faves on its strengths. i was bitterly disappointed they dropped a sort of homecoming from the set on the recent tour both nights i saw them. i think it just gives the band and bono some difficulty live

Bad in studio and the dreadful Elvis Presley And America simply take up to much space on the unforgettable fire. otherwise its fantastic imo

i like to blame it on eno =]
