@ Gyro I noticed that trend, if you enjoyed Red more, the other Wetton/Cross albums (Larks, Starless, USA) will be more to your liking. As for Court, maybe the stuff here would be moreso your thing - Poseidon is kind of like Court - Refined; Lizard goes balls to the wall with free jazz excess, while Islands cools it down with some Impulse/Prestige-sounding jazz vocabulary and a bit of classical and blues on the side before topping it off with a classic title cut that predates the big first wave post-rock groups.

@ Gyro
the Wetton/Cross band increasingly grew louder live, which led to some tension between Cross, who was a violinist and keyboardist, and led to his departure after the final show the band did in the 1970s. The band was considered a "flying brick wall" because of how loud they could be, even if it led to some friction among the band. Nowhere as jazz-inflicted as prior lineups, but far heavier and more inclined to improvisation - and the inclusion of Jamie Muir on percussion for Larks' Tongues in Aspic added an entire new dimension to their sound; chaotic, almost violent in a way. He left after recording to become a monk.

As for the Islands band, the studio album is serene, but these boys could get wild live. Jazz and blues were abundant, Sinfield was backstage handling the VCS3 and other effects that made Boz sound alien to the crowds - their readings of 21st Century Schizoid Man rank amongst my favorites. Boz would go on to be the bassist for...Bad Company?? He became a star, no doubt.

"Boz Burrell is the best singer this band had, by the way"
I do think Boz is underrated. IMPALED ON NAILS OF ICE. But I'd probably still pick Greg for his distinctiveness.

Great write-up, Fripp. I loved this 3-album stretch for KK myself.

this is a very good, informative review fripperoo,
can't help but think the "And" could be omitted from the summary mind you

Starting sentences with "and" is essential.

Of walls and trumpets thousand fold
Prophets chained for burning masks
And reels of dreams unrolled..."

There ain't nothin' wrong with 'Islands'
Robert Fripp however, is a fucking idiot when it comes to the internet. Dude doesn't even allow the cover art of his albums on Last.fm, they're all blank

Thanks for you add this box-set here, Fripper. I never hear nothing about it before. And it's nice to see some love for this period of King Crimson, which I love too. For instance, I love "Islands". I'm goind to pay some attention to this box-set, one of these days.
