not that exact song necessarily but it has this sorta corny triumphant tone that doesn't resonate w/ me. i can put it on right now and give an actual answer that isn't a red-hot take

Avg rating below 4 has me worried.

Also, a ‘great’ rating makes me feel like a disappointment is coming lol.

That’s how high these guys set the bar.

well most of the ratings are troll ratings

also not many bands can be pushing 30 years and still put out a great album so idk why you'd be worried, most lesser bands would be in 2-2.5 territory at this point as their lustre fades

Based off the singles I'm expecting this to be their weakest since No Heroes but I'm sure I'll still enjoy it

idk, you have 2 of their albums 5d, 1 at 4.5, 1 at 4, etc., kinda seems your opinion of them is pretty in line with their current rated-ness

Converge usually kicks in weeks after listening, even months for me. I may be talking out of my ass because I have no idea since when the reviewer has been listening to this, but I feel he just listened to this a few times and wrote his first impressions pretty quickly (even though it's perfectly written).

It reads as if he listened to this expecting much more than just "another Converge record", and felt slightly disappointed he didn't get it the first few listens. I'm certain this will sit better with me since I am already expecting just more of usual heavy Converge with tight musicianship.

With that said...

"The Dusk in Us is oddly paced, and any investment tends to feel intermittent. Their lacerating attacks feel self-inflicted and surgical, but don’t always scar as they should."

I totally get the criticism. I often rearrange track lists however I like them more, so we'll see if this will need that treatment.

"but I feel he just listened to this a few times "

I had about a dozen-ish listens, tbf.

users get a lot pickier when you review beloved acts like converge, radiohead, brand new, etc, and it almost coerces reviewers to disingenuously praise their new albums (and, reviewers are afraid of losing access to advance copies, if labels suspect the reviewer won't praise the album). i say plenty of positive things about this, so idk why people are so irked.

as far as the "kicks in weeks after listening, even months for me" thing, yeah, fair, but, ~music journalism~. gotta strike while the iron is hot with this sorta thing. if all we did was review months-old releases, site traffic would be more or less zero aside from member participation.

"I often rearrange track lists however I like them more, so we'll see if this will need that treatment." - I suspect that'll be the case for me. i can see myself coming back to this in chunks

Yeah, staffers can't wait until weeks or months after a release. That isn't how journalistic sites work lol

"users get a lot pickier when you review beloved acts like converge, radiohead, brand new, etc,"

Oh I agree, and I didn't mean to come off that way.

"i say plenty of positive things about this, so idk why people are so irked."

I know you said positive things about this, which is why I said "felt slightly disappointed". It's just the impression I got while reading this, but then again I think your review it's perfectly written.

"gotta strike while the iron is hot with this sorta thing."

Fair enough ;)
