@Crysis, The packaging is top notch. 4 interchangeable prints inside for the front cutout , yup...

Wow, I like this so much more than their last - gonna have to do a re-listen of 'Sorni Nai' for a final assessment.

Also as a sidenote, the band name and song titles (vocals included ofc) are all in Finnish, not Russian. "Kauan" means 'long' and "Kasvot" for example 'faces'. "Sateen Huuhtoma"? does it have something to do with rain? you bet your ass - means 'rain washed' (or washed by the rain, whichever sounds more correct haha).

Their bio makes me chuckle: "KAUAN are from Russia, sing in Finnish, and are based in Ukraine, but their music is universally stirring."

yeah dont get the fuss about this honestly. There are some beautiful moments here for sure but thats pretty much a requirement for post rock anyways. The fact that there is so much padding between them is really detrimental to the record.

Also vocals and this sort of airy, non-depressive post rock really dont go together imo.

I think, for me, the reason why I enjoy this band is because of their ability to create such beautiful atmospheres. Sorni Nai, in particular, paints such an incredible picture with the music that you don't really need to be able to interpret the lyrics to love it.

This is more than just post-rock. There are definitely a lot more folk elements here than your Explosions in the Sky/This Will Destroy yous. The Finnish language really adds to the atmosphere, and IMO Anton Belov's compositions are excellent. Everything just sounds so well crafted to me as well, not just a bunch of parts, but an incredibly fluid flow. Unfortunately, I have to disagree with you on the vocals. The atmosphere to me is not one of positive emotions, but of a deeper sadness and longing, to which I feel the vocals blend perfectly.

Speaking of Russian...a couple there puts Jeffrey Dahmer to shame...

On second listen, I'm really digging this. I think I prefer this to Sorni Nai, although that's also a great album.

this is a really subtle beast. sorni nai is a lot more climactic, dramatic and impactful. i think this has the capacity to have a much more lasting impression on listeners. i'm really excited to see how i feel about this album in a few months time. i could actually see me 5ing this down the line. i'm that impressed with it. far and away my album of the year so far.

I can imagine this being amazing when you're in the right mindset for it. Not sure what to think of it myself yet. It sounds pretty for sure, but it's also slowly paced for the most part, which can drag for me. Sorni Nai seems like a more dynamic record.

Expecting this to grow over time tho

Yeah same. This takes a bit to get going, but it's pretty massive once it does.

Agreed that the previous 2 albums are def better at this point though. This needs a lot more time.

Two tracks in, and I like the calmness it conveys.
