This is my first time listening to Counterparts. This album kicks some serious ass. My only issue is that its really short, but that is a minor issue.

the weird thing is quill, i had the same reaction to Counterparts lyrics as you did to Touche. If you're not into very personal lyrics, TA won't resonate, and that's fine. To me, Counterparts' lyrics are melodramatic and overwrought, the sort of stuff an emo high school kid writes and thinks is deep because he discovered metaphors ("A Memory Misread" is a good example) where as TA is honest and vulnerable, even to the point of bordering on cheesy.

"Freak, this is pretty much touché but with not as cool lyrics and longer songs. Take that as you will, lol. "

TA started writing longer songs on their last album -- and I also think they use dynamics much better than CP, but hey, to each his own. CP just isn't my thing

tl;dr whether you prefer TA or Counterparts comes down to whether you prefer "tastelessly overt" to "melodramatic and overwrought"

yeah the kind of extremely blunt and overt approach to Bolm's writing and delivery is one of the key traits i love about it but i can definitely see it being unenjoyable, especially on their earlier works. and yeah CP has some great lyrical gems (like "Solace") but a lot of it is tastelessly overdramatic at times. still love it tho

How are either of these bands in any way over-dramatic?? And it doesn't take a genius to realize what Brendan is talking about in his lyrics, it's just more cleverly written than TA imho. They're both brutally honest writers, one is just more direct than the other in their approach.

Chorus is tighter than a nun's asshole but those god-damn ascending guitar licks at the end of Arms Like Teeth has me shooketh. Alex Re wrote that tune and it shows.

Title track absolutely rules.

And while we're on the topic of lyrics... I love a lot of Brendan's work but I can't stand it when he goes all #br00tal in songs like Thieves and Choke. "With my last breath, I will strangle you to death, with your own fucking hands." Like, c'mon.

Fragile Limbs is a close second for me Jeet.

Also Julian I'm glad you brought up the title track. Not many people seem to be crediting that song
