no Twin Fawn Johnny?

I’d say you’re right but I’d add that, 16 Psyche, and The Culling lol

Twin Fawn would be #4 for sure - rest is equal parts undisastrous and unremarkable :/ Guess this and Birth of Violence make up the boring part of her discog

Why did I listen to her two worst albums first then? Lol

So that’s why this relationship failed to get off the ground initially

the worst parts of Abyss are a substantial cut below anything here tbh (but the highlights are also much higher)

I think Crazy Love and Simple Death are far and away the worst on Abyss… but it’s got Iron Moon, Maw, After the Fall, and Color of Blood which I think are all timers. Carrion Flowers and Survive are amazing too, and the title track is absolutely sinister.

Simple Death is a contender for the best track on Abyss and by far the most cohesive piece of songwriting on that tracklist. Only track there that lives up to her earlier singer/songwriter pedigree (compare to the writing on Survive and Grey Days (amateurish) and Carrion Flowers (grating and overdone)). Maw, Iron Moon and After the Fall hold their own, could take or leave the rest

People still like apocalypsis right?

Vex is ruined by those shoehorned harshes at the peak of the song / 16 Psyche is uninteresting until it hits the bridge

and yeah, Apokalypsis holds up great!

new rule of thumb, if i can imagine a song being on Guitar Hero, it's not for Johnny

(this is more about the theatricality than it being a good guitar song lol)

Vex has always been one of my favorites off this. Nothing tops The Culling though.

i love a decent amount of theatrical shit, just don't think this rather tepid brand of doom metal or (especially) one of Kurt Ballou's sloppier production jobs were the best fit for her

Agree on the Kurt Ballou take, Sitek has delivered a much better version of her.

I wonder if the "cutting ties" theme on the new one also includes the Converge gang, so no more bloodmoon.

Vex's vocals are indeed great. Good shoutouts to 16 and The Culling too.
