Dunno if i'm getting it wrong, but you seem to think that this is The National "by the numbers." And I honestly think that this is one of their most experimental and risky releases. Of course it has several The National-isms, but it has plenty of new sounds to offer.

I think you're getting it wrong.. I think this is their most adventurous and different record.. I just also think it wasn't a brilliant adventure to take..
It's a 3.5, people.. Everything will be alright

I can't wait to listen to this.
Then I can give it a 2 with a clear conscience.

I can agree that with a few flourishes and a closing left turn, this album is The National by the numbers. I love The National by the numbers. The National is the damn best by the numbers band I know.

Listening to their live broadcast from the Bowery Ballroom and oh yes I can feel that this is going to click very soon.

I know a lot of people I respect love this album. I just can't bring myself to get interested in it.

It's a document of what frustrating adult longing feels like in the modern age, there's definitely a certain setting/set of imagery you're going to need to be willing to live in for a while. But the band knows that and turn what could've been horrendously sentimental into something really quite relatable and cleansing. I suppose I can get why some folks aren't into it, but man once this band clicks they cast a spell like no other

'No Time to Crank the Sun', 'Paul is Alive' and 'Careless' are decent
Album was a massive disappointment overall, think I chucked a 3 its way

I spin the El Vy t/t every now and then

Listening to it now as opposed to the new National it sounds incredibly lightweight
Matt probably wasted a few decent lines and vocal melodies on it, Crank the Sun could have been an excellent National song, Careless too maybe with a bit of work.
As side projects go it's ok though, far from embarrassing

i think it's a case of music not suiting the vocals in the least..
paul is alive is decent
silent ivy hotel is good on the verses, but sags on the chorus
sad case reminds me a bit of the whigs, so good enough
careless is decent..

I don't know what they were thinking putting those 'Lion King' backing vocals into 'Crank the Sun' - the stripped back live version that appeared before the album dropped was superior looking back now

Menomena - they're a band I missed out on but Zak said they're quality so that's gospel.
Probably :D
