Dream Theater lost the ability to write actuall songs years ago. On the contrary Fates Warning continue to amaze with their offerings.
A comparison of their most recent albums shouts that.

@ Willie
My favourite is this one. The others are, "Disconnected", "Perfect Symmetry" and "Parallels", not necessarily by this order.
I don't know very well their music phase od the 80's, with the exception of "Parallels", yet. So, I'm not very comfortable to have a final opinion about "Awaken The Guardian". But I know that is one of their best.
About "Theories Of Flight", I don't know the album yet, but I have great expectations about it. I must buy it. It's in my next list of purchases.

Ok, man. You know me very well, already. I respect always the others opinions, especially yours. You're a guy with a vast knowledge about prog. However and as you know, we can't have always the same opinion. After all we are talking about music, a very subjective matter.
About Alder, I don't have any problems with his vocals. And I don't have any problems at all with any kind of other things on the album, too. Anyway, I think my review is perfectly clear with my feelings about the album.
Great that you liked the work of Moore on the album. This is another higher point too. Besides, I always loved his technical style.

@ Hawks
But you should, urgently. You can use the names of the albums mentioned by me and Willie, to begin your path with this great band.

"Dream Theater lost the ability to write actuall songs years ago. On the contrary Fates Warning continue to amaze with their offerings."
"A comparison of their most recent albums shouts that."
Absolutely. I can not agree more with you, pal.
| | | For sure gonna check them within the next few days. Figured I'd start with Awaken the Guardian just because the cover art for that one is sweet as fuck lol.

Great Hawks. However, you mustn't forget that this is a prog band. So, all their albums are somehow different. They had many different musical periods all over the years. This is said by their leader Jim Matheos. He said that only "Perfect Symertry" and "Inside Out" are in the same vein. So, you must be prepared for the differences between the albums all over the years. "Awaken The Guardian" is perhaps their first album real prog with complex music lines.

Sorry, but I stay in my position, e21 bro. I can't appreciate all the vocal lines, so I wish there were still more instrumental sections. Despite the presence of couple of great melodies, I'm sadly not a big fan of the singer, and it's my only gripe with that band. I enjoy most of the album though, as you can see with my rating. And it's cool that Kevin Moore is a part of it.
Jethro, you make me sad. Over the years Fates has grown to be one of my absolute favourites, I love all of their albums in a different way. This has never been quite a classic for me either but it really shows their diversity.
| | | Album Rating: 5.0
I agree Nag. This band always shows their diversity. And I accept that many people don't consider this album a classic. As I said on the end of my review, this isn’t a consensual feeling.
| | | Album Rating: 4.0
Whoa, SuperNag sighting!!! It's good to see you again, ProgJect colleague and friend! No offense, buddy, but am I the only one?? Well I'm surprised that no one else is talking about his irritating voice in places, especially when he hits high sustained notes. Erk! He also sings with the tip of his tongue, gosh... But I confess, his voice more or less fits with the band (or I started to get used to it).
But musically, they really deliver, especially since drummer Mark Zonder is on board.
Annd come back again, Nag! It's always a pleasure!..
@ksoflas, I agree to disagree. I cannot see this singer becoming a model to me. However, you made a good analogy with PoS from which I agree ;)
@e21, once again, you are more tolerant than me about that band too. It seems I'm always a little more harsh, more severe about bands that we both love, and I always see my ratings lower than yours. I think you must be naturally generous hahah
| | | Album Rating: 5.0
It's really true Jethro. You're almost allways more tolerant that I am. However, my mainly discordance with you isn't properly about the rating of the album. I know that many people don't consider it a classic. No, problem. I can live with it very confortably.
My problem is with the voice of Alder. I know that Alder some times can sung a bit more and yell and scream a bit less. But I think on this album he managed to do a very good vocal job. Still, I continue thinking that he is a nice vocalist.
But this is all a mater of personal taste. As you know, many thinks that the Achille's heel of Dream Theater is your compatriot, James LaBrie. I never felt that, really. I think Dream Theater doesn't have weaknesses in their line up, especially with Portnoy on board. Their problem is with the repetition of an already worn formula. Fortunately, it isn't the same with Fates Warning. The guys continue their diversity, progressing.
Finally, I'm very glad that you like the work of Zonder. The drumming from Zonder is great. He is one of the most underrated in the business.

His jazzy style is so amazing.

@e21, Yes Dream Theater got repetitive with the years. A Dramatic Turn of Events is where I stopped listening to them, and I don't like the style of drummer Mike Mangini. Too machine-like sounding, and not enough inspired or creative. As for James Labrie, I was not a fan of his voice from the start, but I started to get used to it and it was finally all right with time.
I'm now interested in running through the Fates Warning's discography, but nothing before Perfect Symmetry, cause guess what, I don't like their debut style, same for their first drummer ;)

@ Jethro
You know me, my friend. I never give up.
About Dream Theater:
I agree with you. They got repetitive with the years, which was a pity. "A Dramatic Turn Of Events", and I don't know if it was a premonition, was perhaps their last great album. As for James Labrie it was the same with me. First you dislike, but I started to get used to it and it was finally all right with time. And I know what I'm talking about. Despite I know almost all of their discography, I saw them live, three times, in my country. And this is the only band that I saw three times, live. The last time with Mangini on board, already. And I agree, the absence of Portnoy is too much evident. So, I was not so surprised, when he decided to leave the band, after so many years.
About Fates Warning:
I started to get used to with the vocals of Alder and it was finally all right with time, too. About the works before "Perfect Symmetry", I'm not feel comfortable to talk about them. I don't know them enough well to have a final opinion. Anyway you must be prepared with my next review because it will be about another album from them. Ah, ah, ah...

Oh yes, I'm still around . I just have too many other things to keep me busy these days, haha.
I guess I haven't really got an ear for the technical aspect of vocals, or instruments for that matter. I think Alder's vocals are perfect for the band and I've always liked them, from his more 'uncontrolled' voice on No Exit to his more subdued style later on. Have you heard Theories of Flight? I'm curious whether you like his voice better there. I'm also curious what you think about their first singer John Arch, because it's my understanding that people generally consider his voice the more acquired taste of the two.
LaBrie, on the other hand, continues to irk me sometimes, even long after I've gotten used to his voice. I love his vocals on Awake though, he was still in prime form on the first two DT albums he sang on. I'd take Fates Warning over Dream Theater any day anyway, especially in their current states. DT is still playing bigger venues but let's face it, are a shell of what they once were. In contrast, I saw Fates Warning last January in a small town, which was fantastic.

Another great review man. Excellent choice too. A great underrated band. I do not know if I prefer this or Perfect Symmetry, Parallels or Disconnected. Maybe this one. Pos.

''I guess I haven't really got an ear for the technical aspect of vocals, or instruments for that matter'' .
Stop being humble, Nag ;)
No, I haven't heard Theories of Flight, but I will change it now that you make me curious about it. Will also revisit and give another chance to Awaken the Guardian. I've listened to it once, and wasn't impressed but if I want to check out John Arch, it's an obligatory passage...
Take note that I don't really hate Alder's vocals, but I always thought the band could have found someone much better.
About Labrie, he often takes chances with his high pitch. He obviously has less power than he used to have and he acts like if it wasn't the case, so the results can be terrible.
