woah ok the Daughtry comparison is def not warranted haha. a couple songs sound too alt rock radio friendly but nothing gets as bad as some "hard rock" mid to late 2000s bands like Daughtry...

Hahaha okay maybe I'm just bitter but damn I hate that album

that's fair man it's pretty mediocre! im not as hardcore of a fan as you (most of their albums other than Cope are 3.5-4) so I can def understand the frustration

Yeah I'm just as hyperbolic with my hate as I am with my love for things lol

Freddie no offense but what is a 5 for you? I swear your rating is a 5 in every third thread I see you in.

hahah this^^

A 5 is usually just an album that I feel like I NEED. If something really moves and inspires me, and has a considerable achievement in construction thematically and musically, I'm gonna 5 it.

Cope = Daughtry, agreed.

"So I'm genuinely curious as to what makes them so popular here relative to other areas of the music sphere."
I'm curious too. They have 300k Fb likes while maintaining ~600 ratings for each release on RYM... first thought is they aren't deemed worthy of attention by "serious" music listeners. Age demographics of Sputnik is another consideration. Anecdotally I find that users are most active in the teen/college years with most abandoning the site after that (true for my peer group). Thrice is an illustrative case. Knew tons of users who obsessed over them while active on Sputnik, but none above the age of 25 who still consider them a favorite. They maintain high averages here purely through young listeners joining the site. The RYM community seems to skew older, maybe that's why they don't care about this band? Some conjecture. (The Wonder Years is a similar case.)

If you add the standard 0.5 to every RYM score, you get something like:
Virgin (4.0), Mean Everything (4.0), Simple Math (3.7) and Cope (3.5)

True. They toured a lot with them early on and still maintain a relationship. It would've probably taken me at least a year or two to even get familiar with Manchester and Kevin Devine if they hadn't toured with them in 2007 or so.

I thought the back half was just okay my first couple listens, but then every track grew on me. It's still not quite as strong as the first half but it's closer than I initially thought.

I definitely expected a bit more based on the singles but it's still a big step up from Cope
