I think the album is fairly decent. Rise Against hasn't slipped too far in my opinion. The issue is the reviewer keeps comparing the album to "Swing Life Away." One can't just set the standard at "Swing Life Away" and expect everything that follows to be just as good. "Wolves" isn't a classic, but I can't say the album is a 2.2 either. That's unrealistically low especially for Rise Against. Considering lyrics, music, and filler tracks, the album doesn't draw near that range. Especially comparing *all* of Rise Against's discography, "Wolves" still doesn't round out to literal garbage. As a die-hard Rise Against fan, the album comes up above average. It's a step in the right direction and I believe Rise Against will learn from "Wolves" and move on.

i think row was just using swing life away as an example of how their songs used to be honest and stood for something while now their songs don't really have that impact (correct me if i'm wrong rowbro)

also what are the 2 songs on TSATW with screams? for the life of me i can't remember

I know one of the songs on "The Sufferer & The Witness" that does not contain screaming is "Roadside." I'm not sure if there are two per-say, but I am certain "Roadside" does not contain any harsh vocals. Aside from that, I understand your opinion about Rise Against's songs not containing impact. Personally, I can't say that they don't have any impact. "Awake Too Long" on "The Black Market" is one of their best songs to date. That song is lyrical genius and has to be the best song on the entire album. Granted, none of the songs on "Wolves" packed a big punch in that way, but I think the lyrics in a lot of them were well spoken to say the least. Then again, it depends on what the listener is looking for in the song. "Swing Life Away" thrives on it's simplistic outlook on life in a nostalgic way. It pulls emotion out of the listener by utilizing lyrics that describe an experience nearly everyone has faced. "Wolves" is not trying to achieve that with their songs. "Wolves" is a political album discussing worldwide political issues. Honest lyrics is hard to come by in a relative topic such as politics and morals.

I love me some pre-Endgame Rise Against but "lyrical genius" is not something that ever really applies to this band. They won me over with big hooks and emotion.

Their hooks and emotional lyrics are a positive attribute, but I subjectively feel like their lyrical style is stellar. Tim McIlrath is no Maynard James Keenan, but he most certainly delivers. Also, "Endgame" was not their best album, but I felt like "Survivor's Guilt," "Wait For Me," and "This is Letting Go" were decent songs. "Endgame" was obviously released to appeal to mainstream audiences and was dangerously close to pop-punk. However, those three tracks were diamonds in the rough in my opinion. Last time I checked, "Ready to Fall" included a screaming portion at the end. "Injection" also utilized harsh vocals during the breakdown. The only other song I can think of that didn't contain harsh vocals was "Prayer of the Refugee."

Drop I was saying there are only two songs on Sufferer will full on screaming sections, Injection and Ready to Fall like Baron said. Other songs have Tim doing his strained semi scream for sure but none of them have a full screaming section like those two do. Your point is fair though, I'm stretching the definition a little bit

also ye Ins you pretty much got it, it's undeniably a cheesy and sentimental song but the sentiment is entirely earned and extremely heartfelt. I don't feel remotely close to Tim on any of their new stuff but I do when I hear Swing Life Away

Your point is fair. Rise Against has seldom delivered a track on the level of "Swing Life Away" in terms of tangibility. "Swing Life Away" stripped away Rise Against's aesthetics and took the listener on a personal journey. However, as previously stated, "Swing Life Away" can't compare to anything else for the reason that there is no comparison. They were not sequels or follow-ups to each other. One could compare a track like "Satellite" to "Swing Life Away" since there are some similarities, but "Wolves" is not even in the ballpark so-to-speak. The premise you made about "People Live Here" is justified, but I feel like saying "Miracle" is their best song in the past decade is an overstatement. Like I said, a lot of listeners overlooked tracks like "Awake Too Long" and "Survivor's Guilt." Otherwise, it depends on what the listener is looking for. You did make some fair points and I respect your opinion, but my main objective is that you reconsider some standards.

You might not have been as letdown if you were to have examined their influences for "Wolves." Take into account the subject matter of the album and do the math. Rowan made a great point in saying 'Rise Against is only good when they are angry.' They simply channeled their anger differently. However, my disappointment with the album is that it felt unnecessary in some ways. "People Live Here" is the entire album in one song. The track is the complete definition of silent rage. That being said, "Wolves" ran short in the aspect of not living up to expectations. Fans expected "old Rise Against" to return in an era plagued by political shortcomings, but we instead got "new Rise Against" who more or less did the same.

Great comment.

I'm still not gonna touch this because their anger is what made them (look at their goddamn name). Doesn't matter cuz they've become a meme for teenagers.

You are unfortunately correct. The way in which they channeled their anger this go-round was unsettling to say the least. Rise Against embraced a new philosophy heading into the modern age. Looking at their past political tracks like "Make It Stop" and "I Don't Want to Be Here Anymore," it's not surprising that "Wolves" would be of the same standard. Tim McIlrath doesn't have to scream to make a point, but the feel of the album raises the question as to why they are holding back.
