This is still my second favorite AFI, but I have not yet heard anything preceding StS.

(un?)fortunately i haven't heard any of them so i can't really tell. judging from a couple of songs they aren't much of an improvement anyway

Burials is the best of them but itll still probably be a 2.5 for you at most considering you have STS 3'd

Crash Love had some decent tracks but the theatrical direction felt really out of place for them on the heels of several darker-toned records. Burials is OK I guess. The new one is like decemberunderground minus anything truly memorable. Snow Cats and Pink Eyes are as close as they come on The Blood Album to recapturing any semblance of their former selves.

The way I see it:

1. Every album up to Black Sails are good times 90's shit.

2. Sails, Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow and the EPs from 98 was their peak.

3. This and Crash Love are mediocre at best.

4. Burials is awesome.

5. Haven't heard the new one. Singles were ok.

The new album doesn't remind me at all of anything off Decemberunderground. At this point in the band's history no one is ever going to agree on anything. Everyone has their favorites/least favorites.

Davey's voice was at its worst during this recording, IMO. Especially his screaming.

I felt like the screaming was fine on this. Sounds passionate at the very least as opposed to the bored sounding Davey on some of the new tracks

"Bored sounding Davey" It's weird, because he does it intentionally. It's pretty obvious. There are two tracks on Blood that he does that style of singing: "Get Hurt" and "So Beneath You". Then there's Burials with "Heart Stops". I think he's trying to channel some kind of emotionless style that maybe pertains to the lyrical content.

I think Daveys screaming is great, although on later releases and in more recent live shows, it's obvious he's not able to do it with as much as ease as he once was. His screamy/growly part on Still a Stranger was an unexpected treat

"I think he's trying to channel some kind of emotionless style that maybe pertains to the lyrical content."

But his lyrics and vocal deliveries tend to be very emotional and charismatic?

@Fadedsun I agree with you. Its quite obviously intentional. I just think it sounds bad.

@Sweeney that might be why still a stranger is possibly my favorite track on the new cd

I'm loving Dark Snow, especially that fuzzy guitar solo towards the end. This might be a unpopular opinion, but Dumb Kids isn't doing much for me at the moment. Who knows, with AFI I change favorites all the time.

It's surprising that they haven't been opening with Dark Snow, actually. They opened with Torch Song for the Crash Love tour. I wonder why they never opened with Sinking Night during the Burials tour? That tour was begging for that song. They make some weird choices for their live shows. It probably revolves around what Davey thinks he can handle each night.

I'm not sure I've ever seen someone stoop so low when defending a bad performance as to say that the person in question was doing it intentionally...
