I was afraid of this being a bastardisation but then it turned out it was a classic live rendition and my worrying was all for naught

An interesting opinion Calc; can an artist bastardize his own music?

@Boney: Yes they can, and in my eyes quite easily. For each artist it’s a case by case scenario. As for why I hate this, it goes against everything that made Carrie and Lowell a good album on a fundamental level. Having Sufjan's more grand sound like in Age with this album can't work in principle since it contradicts the subject matter and tone on the album. Having all the wanky grandness like All of Me Wants All Of You's ending makes every single word feel disingenuous and makes me nauseous. You can't have such delicate/tender subject matter and tone delivered in a way reserved only for the grandest of stories, it doesn't feel right to me at all.

Plus, on top of that the airy production on Sufjan's voice is completely gone. This takes a lot away from this due to its addition to the album’s context (plus just sounding so much better in my opinion). On the album he sounds like his life is fading away as he narrates his life, whilst on here it's like Sufjan hired actor trying to sing the experiences portrayed on the album. Every change minus Blue Bucket's ending are for the worst, diametrically opposed to the spirit of what the album means to me. Plus I don't like the extra songs, so bonus on something I already didn't like.

@Talons: I'm curious to what other ones you've heard.

Curious what other live albums I've heard? Not hundreds and hundreds, but a good amount.

Fair enough. I need to get on more live albums, however the majority are 60-80's Rock albums which I don't care that much to check out.

I definitely see where you're coming from Calc; I was thinking from a more theoretical standpoint though. Sufjan created these songs, and he's free to do whatever he wants with them and it's kind of imposing and arrogant of the listener to claim that these are "bastardized" versions of these songs. We can certainly discuss our opinions on the execution, but who are we to say what is the "purest" form of the songs. Despite how it may sound to you, it's entirely possible that Sufjan feels these arrangements are just as powerful and resonant to him as the album versions. Now I've only listened once of course and I doubt I'd ever consider this the better or "definitive" version of the Carrie & Lowell tracks for myself personally, but I certainly think it's a worthwhile musical endeavor and one that in most cases reveals new meanings and layers to these songs.

Sufjan can compose and rearrange them however he sees fit. I don't oppose his right to do so, nor I am saying that my perspective of the 'purest' version overshadows his viewpoint on the art he creates. I don't control his feelings towards his art, however he doesn't dictate and control my perception of it either.

Jesus, the Blue Bucket Outro is incredible.

Fuck it, I'm gonna join the bandwagon and 4.5 this.

I think this is the signal for me to finally go back and finish Suf's back catalogue

I enjoy Carrie and Lowell, but I haven't enjoyed Age or Illinois. If I don't enjoy Seven Swans or Michigan then I just don't enjoy his music minus that one album, I think I enjoy his more subdued sound and hate his more grandiose adventures.

Illinois and Michigan were his two best before Carrie & Lowell came out. Those are his top 3 imo

The coda to All of Me Wants All of You is hnggggg, I dare say the version here is a better song than the one on the album (not that the version here would have worked at all in that context)
