Yea it sounds like the last two... Don't expect anything like their first four.

the difference is there wasn't much of an attempt at singing on the early stuff because their efforts at doing so are usually cringe inducing

I really wish other bands could be as selfless and realize their potential in the way Mastodon have with this album. I feel like the last two albums incorporated everyone's ideas but also felt like a collection of songs that stood independent of one another. That's not the case here, as the same themes and direction of the album is apparent even with obvious contributions from every member to every song, and seemingly for the good of the song every time. The Precious Stones, Steambreather and Roots Remain sequence is one of the best three song runs I've heard since Funeral,Bastard and Death of Music on Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine (though not as good).

There are just so many well executed moments in here that were unexpected, from the QOTSAy riffs in Steambreather, to that passage with a great solo and funky baseline from Troy in Ancient Kingdom, the Jane's Addiction coming down the mountain style "It's right in front of me" part near the end of Jaguar God, etc. Just a really fucking solid group effort where everyone seemed to call on each other to use their strengths at parts suited for them and exercise restraint where they weren't needed.

The only thing that seems formulaic was having Show Yourself as track two (as were Curl of the Burl and The Motherload on their albums), but I don't even mind that so much. I guess I'm in the minority in that I enjoy a catchier pop-metal track. As long as there's not more than one. The rest of the album had a lot of meandering twists and turns and is the most proggy thing they've done since Crack the Skye.

first two were decent because they didn't try to fool themselves into thinking that they could actually sing. the grunts and yells were perfect for the music they were playing.

not to mention the "concept" from leviathan wasn't some ridiculous, inane nonsense

"some ridiculous, inane nonsense"

at least CTS had ace music, even if nobody actually knows what it was about

also, BM's concept is really underrated.

"It's about climbing up a mountain and the different things that can happen to you when you're stranded on a mountain, in the woods, and you're lost. You're starving, hallucinating, running into strange creatures. You're being hunted. It's about that whole struggle." - Sanders

my man sevengill comes to the rescue. blood mountain is a kickass concept. leviathan is about the coolest concept i can think of, moby dick, captain ahab being consumed by his obsessions. remission has some awesome concepts in ol' nessie and shit
