I can't stand the second movement at all, so I felt my descriptions were pretty applicable to it honestly.

i think you get your point across well, but i disagree with your point that it didn't accomplish what it was set up for. i think beethoven didn't actually intend to write three amazing tunes, but stick to form, which is a critical concern for composers even today. i think the second movement is meant to be filler. it's meant to be not complex. and that perhaps serves to make the first and third movements more impactful. it's like an intermission.

I'd argue that such a piece isn't necessary as movements one and three should be combined into one powerful, swooping piece of music.

"The opener “Adagio Sostenuto” ... makes arguably one of the best openers for a classical composition in known history"

Plenty of classical music critics agree with Snide on that. I doubt Snide is a classical expert, but maybe you should ask yourself that, hal1ax.

ask myself what? the question i asked him? i'm not the one laying down those types of statements *because* i do not have extensive knowledge of the genre . and how are the opinions of the critics relevant ? i just wanted to know how familiar with classical he is, because you should probably thoroughly explore a genre before saying "x is arguably one of the best the genre has to offer!" rather than making the claim because a bunch of knowledgeable people said so

Pretty fair question hal, it's a big statement to make in a review

I've listened to a fair amount of classical, I'm definitely not an expert but I don't want to say I'm a novice either. That statement I made in the review was based off of popular opinion + my own experiences with the genre.

I'm not trying to be a dick. I thought the write-up was decent, and it's always cool to see classical being reviewed, but if he hasn't heard very much classical at all, a very broad statement like that feels hollow to me

I dont see how it was hollow. I dont think he was implying it is the best classical music has to offer, just reflecting on something that really has been argued to be one of the best.

i read it as -- it is one of the best openers in known history, period. but fine.

not a big deal. i was just wondering how familiar with the genre he is, because i think predicating a statement like that on critical acclaim and very minimal knowledge is kind of insubstantial

Dece review but i agree with some other comments saying you should you familiarise yourself with the classical canon a little more. Never mind that you're not actually reviewing a recording, but like you said, it's difficult to offer any insight on a composition that's had practically anything and everything said about it already.

Couple odd word choices, like "laden out over" in the first paragraph and "breaking repetition to an extreme" in the third. Also the way you use "the straw that broke the camel's back" metaphor in the third implies the composition was already teetering on the edge of enjoyability, but the review reads now, it seems everything was going smoothly until then from your point of view.

Thank you Jac! I'm jamming Hammerkleiver next to listen to even more material.

I've got another date tonight though, so I'm gonna have to wait until tomorrow to listen! This one's with someone I've actually met so I'm 100% sure it isn't gonna be another catfish.

The Hammerklavier rules. It's pretty intimidating, though. I'd recommend the Waldstein, the Appassionata, Sonata in E minor op. 90, E major op. 109
