Wonderful movie. Loved the opening song so much.

Hey this is a great review, interesting perspective. Tho it is unfortunate you didn't get to see see the movie first... Once you have the visuals and emotions in your head to go along with the songs, you might even up your rating, as they seem so inextricably tied to me.

I saw it on New Years Eve. On a par with Rogue One as the most fun I've had at the cinema in ages.

Just got back from seeing this, loved it. My only real gripe is that the ending was a little too long.

the last ten or fifteen minutes is one of the best scenes I've ever seen in my life tho

I must be the only one who doesn't like "Audition". It's not a bad song at all but it feels so out of place from the rest of the film and pretty award baity. Especially when you consider the rest of the film's songs have a Gershwin vibe, the broadway-type vibe is kind of off putting.
That's my only real gripe though. Everything else about the movie is near-perfect.

I loved all the songs imo.

@Moonchild Yeah, I do get annoyed by the cinematography choice of "zoom-in on crying woman as she sings." They used that in Les Mis and BINGO Academy Award. I like the song, though I think it's also a bit out of place since you have no idea what she's talking about at first. The only song that I consider out-of-place musically is the John Legend tune, but it's supposed to feel that way as part of the plot.

lol (SPOILERS) why is John Legend in this movie for like 2 seconds? was hoping he'd have a cooler musical number

His character is only important in how it directly affects a main character

Thanks plane, this was more of an excitement write up for me and I probably could have tackled what's great about this from some much better angles had I just waited to gain the added perspective of the visual component. I'm really impressed by this soundtrack...even (still) without seeing the film, it's continued to grow on me and evolve into this experience totally independent of the movie. I'm actually afraid that when I finally do see it, the scenes won't live up to what I've concocted in my own mind.

I can't really imagine knowing the soundtrack almost by heart and THEN seeing the movie. I feel like it's going to ruin the magic. You should stop listening to it, to be honest you never should have listened to it in the first place until you had seen the movie, but your choice I guess.
