Yeah they were playing like 2/3s of Death Magnetic every show for years

--six songs from death magnetic--

Ha ha. Well, I stand corrected. I wasn't really a fan of Death Magnetic. It took a while to even grow on me enough to be a 3. So, I guess I wasn't paying attention to their shows back then.

4/5

Bass = 4.5/5

Drums 3/5

Kirk 3/5

James voice 4.5

Riffage = 4.5

Production = 3.5

The major problem with this album is that a lot of the songs end up being a bit too slow tempo and go on a bit long. If the tempo was increased on those and the structure more interesting, it'd be a much better album!

I look forward to their next album!

I've still only jammed this entire thing like twice, which is absolutely jarring considering my Metallica life

I listened to it 3 times through when I got it and haven't touched it since. A few catchy songs, but not a whole lot of substance here.

yah this album is fucking boring but "Spit Out The Bone" rules hard

I swear the main riffs to "Dream No More", "ManUNkind", "Am I Savage?" and "Murder One" are all just variations of the exact same riff

Is it normal that I'm getting a black album vibe from this or?

Also, the vinyl release sounds amazing.

Well Willie, "Death Magnetic" was intended to restore Metallica back to their thrash sound. The album was a redemption for what "St. Anger" left on their legacy. I didn't enjoy "Death Magnetic" that much, but I did enjoy "The Day That Never Comes." The difference between the albums is that "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct" is more diverse than "Death Magnetic" in terms of sound. "Hardwired..." offers Metallica songs in different styles they've done through the years. I would call it a sample of each genre they've played with over time. Regardless of personal opinion, I can say that you are right in the sense that the album could dominate their setlist due to the variety it offers. However, the question is whether or not the tracks can carry a concert. The songs aren't bad, but they do nothing to advance Metallica in any way. Metallica could easily achieve the same variety by playing one song off of each album they've released.

So they debuted Spit Out the Bone last night, I'll be so god damn pissed if they take it out straight away for this Saturday.

At this point in Metallica's career, I don't think they're looking to advance themselves in any way. I think what we've heard on this album and "Death Magnetic" is basically what we'll get from here until they retire. They're comfortable and just playing what they want, and it still seems to get a positive response from their fans... so win-win. Also, I don't think they write albums to carry a concert anymore, because if they drop too many 'classics' people would shit.

Off to YouTube to find the show.

^100% agree with Willie. Metallica is the biggest metal band in history and one of the most successful bands ever. They're just gonna do their thing until they retire because there's really no need to write another RTL or MOP. They're just chillin and livin the life, and will put out whatever they're feeling. the next Metallica albums will basically just be HW...TSD again and again. and yeah, they aren't too worried about writing any "concert carriers" because they already have an entire classic collection of dozens of songs to choose from. Even Death Magnetic has been almost entirely forgotten about in Metallica's setlist.

What do they really play regularly from any album beyond the black album? Nothing really. Each new album seems to get its "15 minutes of fame" during the subsequent tour and then it's gone. I think there might actually be one or two from this album that survive into the next album/tour cycle, though. The title track is short enough to probably squeeze in, for example.

"Seek and Destroy", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Master of Puppets", "One", "Enter Sandman", "Sad but True", and "Nothing Else Matters" never leave the setlist... They'll play like 5-7 songs from this album, probably play "Fuel" or some other song from the Load/Reload era, and whatever spots are left are filled with seemingly random tracks from the first 5 albums (sometimes even a garage inc cut)

^Yeah but that's usually only on album runs, when I saw them last at leeds fest 2015 it was a fairly balanced set, with only St.Anger getting no love, and we got all three of Fuel, Memory Remains and King Nothing, and it was glorious.

They played like 5-6 Death Magnetic songs for like 5 years, they'll probably do it with this album too
