@Titan James was easily his most cockiest on stage during the Newsted years. Dude doesn't seem cocky at all since then/when Cliff was in the band.

i cant pinpoint it jeff, but he is clearly a totally different person now.....even with him not allowing Jason Newsted to carry on with his side project

also, a lot of younger folks seem to think that Metallica were always as popular as they are now.....as great as RTL, MoP, and Justice were, those albums were very extreme at that time and were slightly undergroundish....far from mainstream metal......thats the james i really liked

my point? the popularity changed him.....that cocky confidence wasn't always there

Never thought of him as cocky even though you are probably right. However, I strongly feel that after Cliff's death, the chemistry was never the same. I think Lars and James needed someone who would treat them as equals and not defer like Kirk.

Titan I know you remember, and I remember James being way more personable back then. Not even close to as popular as they are now. They didn't really start scratching the surface until I want to say late 87-89 By the time 'one' came out and a couple years later was the real mark on the mainstream everything before wasn't nearly as close.

'cocky confidence' manos bro, opposed to straight out 'cocky'

and after cliff died, i don't think they wanted an equal in the band......this was when lars really took a step forward in the decision making process if you remember....

and yes jeff, once they shared the stage with Guns N Roses, the attitudes started to change....thats what happens when you sell 16,000,000 copies of an album here in the states.....GnR did it twice at that point, and metallica were now their equals

Oh right, but still cocky confidence is still a negative treat in my book. And you're right, they never wanted equal neither with Jason nor when they hired Trujillo even both are great players. Which says a lot about both Lars and James' egos and how they affected their music decisions by misusing these guys. On the other hand, you have Blackmore, for example, who has arguably a larger ego but was smart enough to find talented people like Dio/Gillan/Coverdale/Hughes and use them appropriately.

Maybe (what you guys are talking about) started after his rehab. Maybe since he didn't drink anymore he didn't know how to handle himself on stage or something, and the "cocky confidence" is what came because of it. Still disagree though but I agree he does act a bit differently post Newsted.

....or maybe you're just running out of things to bash the band for so you start projecting things to not like about them?

Loved Metallica, and I still love the goodies, but watching them transform into the characters they are today is something else. Not something I'm willing to defend I've lost respect for em' a long time ago. Load/Reload? Okay St Anger? Ha! Some kind of monster? That's when it became a sitcom for Metallica. Their antics, personality, attitude.. magnified even more when they sucked! They have such a track record it's unbelievable.
