that's why artists have side projects under different monikers i guess. All this sanctimonious talk would likely go out the window if my hypothetical band started achieving popularity/earning decent money so im probably being way too hypocritical.
I can't imagine there's anything fun about having to bust your ass at a 9-5 all week then try and write/rehearse/record material for your blackened funeral doom EP.

Obviously they enjoy it but yeah for it to become the main source of income would be the dream.
Seeing all the sentiment from disappointed fans would definitely get to me though but i guess by the time you're properly 'selling out' you don't really give a shit about em anymore

'idk there's still something real admirable about bands who play semi-inaccessible music that continue to play in that vein even when they experience more mainstream popularity, or bands that play flat out obscure shit with absolutely no interest in monetizing.'

Agreed with the former, not the latter.

I usually don't lose sleep over this kind of stuff but just watched the Metallica + Gaga video and it's an absolute disgrace, a ridicule of epic proportions. I'd probably take the money and run too, but these guys don't deserve to be called a metal band anymore. I stood up for them during the Load/Reload years but watching this shit today was painful. And they wrote a song for Lemmy on this shit of an album smh.

Well it's the first time they collaborated with Lady Gaga. And it doesn't bother me so much that they did it with her but I am disappointed by how poor their performance was and because they contributed to all the stereotypes apart from breaking their guitars at the end. To my eyes these are very different from their Load/Reload years.

What manosg said, it seemed fairly "guitar hero" to my eyes, the cheesy moshing before she came out, just seemed super phony. The live performance equivalent of a misfists t-shirt from target.

not sure how old you are Jeet, but it's disappointing, as manos insinuated.....you wouldn't know it unless you experienced it and grew up in the times

Man I grew up on Metallica just like you guys did. I'd like to think that we've all moved past the cliche “they're sellouts boo hoo" argument but I guess not. It literally plagues any discussion about the band. The Grammy performance was horrible yeah. Quite a few of their albums shat the bed yeah. But goddamn every time it all leads back to this “musical integrity" bullshit. Its soooo redundant at this point. We get it already.

well they sold out in 91 in which i think we can all agree on, but it was still great......this is on a whole other level.....i saw a group of little girls who definitely weren't fans, you know, the same fans as those superbowl halftime fans, jumping up and down as they started their performance of moth into flame

whole other proportions man, nauseating if you will

Who's to say those little girls didn't go home and check out some older Metallica material? Who's to say they definitely weren't fans? This is a very closed minded view of it all.

It definitely was forced. Absolutely pisspoor performance. It could have been decent if they chose a different song.
