Rust In Peace is tied with Coma of Souls for my favorite thrash metal album sooooo
It would be Metallica's best

"the band would've been better, everything else being equal, with him in it"
I think we should accept the fact that James and Lars never wanted Dave to be on board because he never was the obedient type of a guy. His drinking problems were just the reason they were looking to kick him out. I think their relationship was destined to fail sooner rather than latter. On the other hand, Kirk is a guy who accepts his role within the band and almost never complains.

"the masses seem to think it would be #1"
The "masses" would probably put the Black Album at #1 if were being real.
"the band would've been better, everything else being equal, with him in it, because of what he brings to the table.....a legitimate 5 tool player if you will rather than a singles hitter like kirk"
See I disagree. I think both Lars/James and Dave are way better off apart from eachother, and I especially don't think Metallica would have put out better albums in the 90s-present just because Dave is in the band, as well as them putting out as much albums that are the same quality as both band's best 1984-1990 works.

"If RiP was a Metallica album it would only be their 4th best"
I disagree, sorry. It would certainly be at least in the third place. "Justice" would be forth.

that's impossible to say. without hammett who knows how master of puppets would've turned out. same thing with the black album.

my whole point was simply that the band didn't really suffer from losing mustaine. now losing cliff is another story...

yes and no. i mean they never made anything close to puppets, or even lightning, after cliff died
so you could say that the quality of their music did suffer once he was gone (unless you're dumb and think justice or s/t are the superior records)

Losing Cliff was a huge loss. Losing Lars would have been a huge win (not to death, but kicking him out or something)

Losing Lars would have been a huge loss for the management & marketing purposes of the band. People still have not realized that Metallica is no longer a band but a music firm.

Dave is good but he's not pivotal to Metallica. Some of their best work happened when he wasn't on board. Dude is just a good ass riff writer, just like James.

If Dave had stuck around, the band would've no doubt imploded by the end of the '80s.
