Tool does have an ear for atmosphere and their nearly self-invented style of "proggy grunge-metal" is quite original. But transcendental? This is just extremely good.

This is the only Tool album as far as I'm concerned. What do they do on any of their other albums that isn't bettered here?

No, just means I don't ever need to listen to them. This does the job.

Yea fair

This is the only one i jam in full anymore. With the following 2, i just jam the songs i dig from em (lateralus, the pot, grudge, right in two, etc)

The later albums have some ok tunes just lacking the pissed off feel of this

I'll agree the next two albums lack that vibe

I prefer this generally because it's their most consistent. Partially bc it closes on an actual song instead of a weird interlude type thing

I like this one best because they sound furious and borderline depraved on it

They scrubbed up pretty for MTV after this one (I know I know - I should refer to 'Hooker with a Penis' accusing them of selling out)

I guess I'm more just saying they chose a new artistic focus that I less like than I'd accuse them of selling out

Yeah I think they just got older and felt the need to chill out a bit. They still have the power behind them on Lateralus, just not the same goofy anger. And don't get me wrong, this is their best album

I thought the later releases were instrumentally an expansion on the previous sound but the attitude changed, making it feel much more relaxed and less charged

hmm, I think the only Tool album that can be called an "expansion" is 10,000 Days

10k days was very conservative for them. Progressed their sound the least out of the four, very safe but played into its strengths.

Doof they weren't going for a grungy aggressive sound so we can't really fault them for that. And for that reason i think theyre worth listening to, they showcase a slightly more subdued yet refined (and dare i say experimental) side to the band. This is my favorite release but

One could argue they came into their own on lateralus

Balls, I was expressing my preference not faulting them in general. Technically their later stuff is perfectly proficient just doesn't hit my sweet spot
