Actually I liked the instrumentals up until that point but (and I may be wrong but it's my impression) there isn't much variability in the songs. It felt very one note most of the time. Also the vocals aren't that great imo. I won't give up just yet tho so I'll listen to Mass VI sometime during the week.

There isnt much variability in Amenras music, Its doom.sludged laces Post metal but its all about atmosphere and tension. Opposites. Black and white. Heavy and Soft. Its bludgeoning you to death with that same riff until you open up, Letting you breath for a minute then doing it again. Thats their thing that doesnt really change much in their music even if they got more refined at it. Amenras about the purge, a feeling its not just waiting for time changes and for you to be Spontaneously entertained. Ive heard this said about the Vox before. I can get it. But those vox are earned, Thoses shrieks come from the deep. You dont get to sound like that by just doing it e.g a growl etc. Its not for everyone I get.

I did some research before checking them out and I can tell they are an emotionally honest and hardworking band. I thought it was cool how the singer respects and admires Christianity and other religions in general (at least the symbols and meanings of it) as an outsider calling himself a "free spirit". That was interesting to know. I also saw he inflicts himself pain on some of the live performances so I get why some people would appreciate the vocals more by witnessing that. In general I can see the appeal just by knowing some of the more superficial stuff behind the band but as far as enjoyment it did failed for me on first impression.

Post-metal can be about atmosphere and tension as well, as much as catharsis. But you are right these guys are foremost doom and sludge. Promoting them as post-metal would be a mistake methinks.

Its real crazy but tatall the amenra shows ive attended everyone found ,well not EVERYONE but so many people,them at a low. I did really. Id been a fan for years but wasnt massively into them and only when i had some serious health shit I randomly watched a live set and 'got it' and it clicked. The bands been a life changer for me but im not removed enough to not appreciate some people are unmoved/bored by it even. It can be pretty monotonous if thats not your thing. Their new song is a perfect example the second half doesnt move me at all. And I guess thats what this album feels like for you hahah

Makes total sense bro and I hope you are doing better. But yeah this type of music can really help you go through tough shit (that was ISIS and Neurosis for me) and hopefully I'll never have to go through another bad period like that for me get into this band but I'll surely keep an eye on them. Lol probably... it seems they are changing gears with the new album tho so maybe I'll dig them more with the new direction.

@banana Its neurosis for me also. Theyre my favourite band ever and have helped me through many times over the years. I got to know Scott last few years through Amenra and hes a great,great dude. He reached out to put me on the guestlist a few years ago which was crazy after being a fan for 20 years. No one wil ever touch Neurosis for me. Isis Were everything to me also up to panopticon. DOnt like anything after ( I know I know ) Oceanic is probably top 10 ever for me.
