I've never enjoyed Åkesson's guitar work that much, and I've never felt like his style of lead guitar was a good fit for Opeth. If people have gripes about lineup changes it's almost always about Lopez leaving, but I'd definitely argue that Lindgren's more reserved style (along with Wiberg's) would have been much better within the context of this style.

It's insane how bad this band has become. Morningrise through GR has to be one of the best run of albums by a band ever made, and I would still unequivocally call BWP the best album I've heard. Hearing them put out this tepid, uninspired stuff is just depressing. It's too bad, because there's moments where you still hear the genius shine through, but its buried under cheesy lyrics, uninspired vocals, meandering arrangements, and bland worship of prog rock greats.

Pretty good as usual. Just wish this one and the past two albums were a side project.

I wonder if the people who complain over 70s prog worship would be more pleased with a full-fledged cock rock album next time.

I have said this before, but Opeth are great as a prog rock band.
Great as one.
But they fucking EXCEL as a metal band.
There isn't anything wrong with trying new things, but this sound is getting stale now and it might be a good idea for the next album to turn the gain up and go a little bit wild. If I want to listen to Jethro Tull; I will listen to Jethro Tull.

Eleven pages so far, can't keep up with all the comments. Agree with most aspects of this review, probably what I would write, this is better than PC, less worthy of Heritage, all who don't like it, please just don't listen etc etc.

They're steaming the album now btw, checking a few tracks and the mix seems to be better than the YouTube singles.

I like Progpeth, Heritage and PC were good shit
This one's most assuredly not good shit, though. It's got all the worst elements of the last two without many of the redeeming factors.
