something about the way a lot of japanese artists compose music just doesn't feel very intuitive to me and i know this guy is japanese american and was literally born here but you listen to his music and you can tell he's japanese i dunno.
like its always a very interesting approach and its cool because they often go at western genres from very unique angles but it just doesn't completely vibe with me a lot of the time, there are always moments that kind of disassociate me from the experience which very much interrupts my ability to want to come back to the stuff for repeat listens.

^I feel that. It gives them a unique edge, but that doesnt always help the songwriting.

This is amazing of course. Like why wouldn't it be? There's a reason they're my favorite band goddammit.

70's pop and disco was not the direction I wanted him to take.

i think he pulls off that disco-y vibe really well

I mean, for the genres he's playing with, the music is fine
but for me personally those genres are a step backwards from the whimsical, fantasy-ish vibes of Lighght, so it's kind of hard to feel enthusiastic about

i think its good that he's evolving though, i loved Lighght but i wouldn't just want the same thing again

really couldn't be more wrong about his music sounding "inherently japanese" that's the dumbest thing I heard today and most of my employees are 18-21. the most similar artists sonically to the shit he's released are all american artists. whatever you think you're hearing is clearly something you've applied to all the japanese artists you've heard
|
| |
didnt ever say it sounded "inherently japanese"
just that his approach to composition on the one album of his i've heard reminds me of a lot of japanese musicians who write this kind of stuff. try having a civil conversation without putting words in peoples mouths.

"most of my employees are 18-21"
