have you listened to these lyrics?

Yeah, I did. I can definitely see why you feel that it may be too focused on it's story, but I can dig that. They obviously were shooting for very high-concept lyricism, and they most certainly achieved that. I also really dig the socially conscious undertones it has by relating the story to current events a little bit. I also get a heavily existentialist vibe from a lot of the themes. The lyrics on here really clicked for me.

i really liked them too, on a more storytelling level though. like how all the slaves are referred to as cargo or the moment where the ship "falls in love" with the survivor by sending out a signal that everything is OK after he takes it over. I get the same existentialist vibes too, especially in the last song

This was an interesting change of pace. Was let down at first, but it's grown on me quite a bit. Bumped to a 3.

Really, really cool record. I find the theatrical structure quite endearing, despite it getting a little sloppy every now and then. What really hooked me was the unique tradeoff of a conventional beat structure to accommodate an intoxicatingly ominous atmosphere. However, I dont think this kind of approach has much utility and can even classify as a gimmick.

I just feel like this should've been a play, a proper musical play, or a visual album, or an extended music video, I dunno. Music on this feels like an afterthought.

This is probably lame.

Fantano sounded like he was gonna give this a 10 until he started tearing it apart ten minutes into the review.

Average being the key word in that sentence.
Also, I just read this Drowned in Sound review and I have to agree pretty much on everything, but most of all, I think they nailed the main problem with this... If you gonna take the lyrics to the absolute front, you gotta have the charmisma to hold the entire album, and daveed simply does not.

Okay but that's, like, subjective?

Pretty mixed feelings about this. A lot of songs had the make of a banger and started off so well and was expecting build up and everything just for it to abruptly... end. When so many were done like this, it's a shame the album didn't end up having a 'banger' apart from Baby Don't Sleep.
Really cool concept, but that last song, wtf it just ruined the mood for me

"you gotta have the charmisma to hold the entire album, and daveed simply does not."
Easily my biggest issue with this album. He doesn't hit that level until the end of the record and by then its too late. Atmosphere and production here is class, and lyricism is solid enough, but Daveed sounds bored and lifeless through 80% of this album. Not to mention his lifeless performance makes it super hard to tell what POV he is currently telling the story from unless you have the lyrics pulled up or paying a lot more attention than you really should for n album.

idk I thought daveed put the right amount of expression that he needed to for this album otherwise he was gonna be childish gambino or something but eh opinions I guess.
would have been fine with that drowned in sound review if they could have come up with a better dismissive comment than comparing them to some rap-metal mindset.
