to be fair, I'd say the "theater-play" structure is ancillary at most, so...

I guessing daveed is the frontman or something, and I guess that now that I have that information I can't really say what you say isn't 100% false, but I stand by my point. It is strutured like a play, but most of all it FEELS like a play.

I don't care about narrative, that's all right, but the songs are boring and there are too many interludes.

U might, quite more serious in nature.

The theme I do not care about, the lyrics are lame with some awful lines throughout, but who goes to clipping for the lyricism, really.

it's the aura to the whole thing. Reeks of theatrics. It really, really does.

What happened to hip hop where we no longer value lyrics at all.

This is a concept album, I am sure hoping we are holding some stake in one of the primary elements of the concept.

I can't speak for others, and I've said this often times, but for me lyrics are always 2nd to the music. Composition, vox and instrumentals, textures, tone and rythm come first and must be well conducted and performed before i even consider looking into the lyrics.

Hip Hop isn't an exception for me. I mean, I understand the fact that it is a mostly narrative genre but if the beats are dope and the flow is tight I can still dig a mediocre/bad lyric. At the same time, if I find the beats/instrumentals to be lackluster and frigid and/or an underwhelming MC I just couldn't give a rat's ass about what he/she's trying to convey through words.

I mean a lot of concept albums do feel like musicals (e.g. Tommy, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, The Wall, Prince Among Theives, etc) it's a moot point to deny whether one is structured in such a way or not. A story needs to have an exposition-climax-resolution or else it would make no sense at all

But, Clover has a relatively good point. It's just that it may need some rephrasing. Where are we now that we don't Value lyrics in the form of Hip-Hop anymore, that is clearly lyric based?

I don't really give a damn what type of Hip-Hop you are listening to, but when you go to a group that is so centrally lyric-based as clipping, why aren't you valueing them? This isn't some Trap-Rap or Memphis-tape where the lyrics are mostly there to put a concrete sound to the music and add to the darkness. This also isn't some Scatting-experience. Daveed puts so much effort into his lyrics, with so many interlocking themes and concepts that span the whole album, that it is just downright ignorant not to value that, not to say disrespectful. That's almost like going to Monet and telling him that his paintings suck because they aren't painted like Pollock paints.

I also get where rabid is coming from, lyrics are always secondary in my eyes to music in all forms. this particular album though kind of requires you to know the lyrics to fully appreciate it because they are telling a story. the telling of the story is too focused on imo but that's what it's doing. if rabid doesn't want to put in the effort to understand what this album is about then it's not surprising he doesn't like it.

Yeah, in that case it's really not surprising.

To me, personally, lyrics come first in the types of Rap that depend on lyrics and whenever something so stupid is said, that I can't rock with it anymore. Otherwise the lyrics really have to wow me for me to care.
