one could make the case that Alchemy Index-era Thrice and Color Spectrum-era TDH are similar in approach and diversity, but yeah, otherwise, that's a stretch

Well wwf, if that's how we define generic nowadays than basically 95% of all bands are

Im just saying I think its fair to say alchemy index Thrice is sort of a contemporary. Its not even close to being like 'wait is this thrice or tdh'

"The Dear Hunter are generic".

Didn't know so many bands made six-conceptual, theatrical rock opera albums with re-occurring melodic and lyrical motifs as well as a whole compilation of 9 EP's displaying a genre based on colours. Damn I need to start listening to more music

Yeah, it's definitely tough to classify Dear Hunter as generic

You gotta applaud the ambition

welp

finally clicked for me

may raise to a 4.5 soon, for me it started around 3.8-range and is now like 4.2-range

also some of the reprises in The March are super obvious (The Old Haunt, The Most Cursed of Hands), but did anyone catch the intro's drum beat is a Smiling Swine reprise? Just caught that one, and both are songs about Pimp/Priest manipulating unsuspecting people to his side. Brilliant.

also the fact that the old haunt reprise instantly and seemlessly leads into a smiling swine reprise too. sooo good.

I went on a 5 day vacation and didn't have time to listen to this album, it was the longest I have gone without it yet... the plane trip back was one of the happiest musical moments of 2016, this is my AOTY

haha thats pretty cool man. I find my enjoyment of music is hugely enriched if I take like a week break from listening to anything; whatever I return to I absolutely love, often even if it was something I wasn't that super keen on before.

to the person who said Goodness having a 5 is an insult, i did not wake up today knowing i'd get in a fistfight but here we are
The Revival is the only lame song on here and it's only slightly lame, whatever the hell that background carnivalesque harmonizing or whatever it is idk how to describe it but it sucks. rest of the song is good tho

In my opinion, The Dear Hunter comes across as dreadfully contrived (or, at least, Casey does). The chamber arrangements are gaudy and self-indulgent. You can tell that Casey is DESPERATE for the text to be seen as profound, when, in reality, it comes across as puerile (Ms. Terri and Ms. Leading?? Is that not supposed to be cringe-worthy??)
