While I agree with the subjectivity/objectivity argument, I can't help but think you should have 5'd at least 50 other post records considering you 5'd this.
Good album. Nice review

Hm yeah if you think this is a 5 I could see you 5ing a lot of other post rock stuff. That being said, it's a pretty emotive and personal genre and so if one record clicks with you it just does, regardless of whether there are objectivity better records

Couldn't agree with you more AsleepInTheBack. It's why you see soooo many post-rock reviews start with "post-rock is a dead genre but THIS album is something special" when the album they're talking about is fairly typical for the genre. Certain stuff just happens to connect with someone and there's no way of explaining it beyond that.
But still, I'm a big fan of post-rock. And even despite what I said... I can't work out a way of understanding that this album could be a 5. I just don't feel like it's really emotive in any way. It's fun to headbang to and fun to ride along with but. I don't know. Again, it all comes down to subjectivity.

MercuryToHell stick to your guns man. feel good about your decision. theres nothing worse than when critics seek to homogenise themselves with everyone elses opinions.

The thing is, I completely get the 'this is not a 5' thing, and why I should use the same logic on other post releases, and that this may not even remain so high for me.
But truth is, this album engaged me more than any release in years, whether that says a lot for my own personal bar or tastes or not is another story but it's just how I felt and still do currently.

It's a nice album, but nowhere near a 5. After I heard Vorel I hoped it was gonna be heavy, however, it's one of their most subdued releases so far.

i bet its not even a 5/10

If it's a five for you then it's a five for you. No matter what other people say about it.

dont take it as an insult to your personal bar or tastes. just own it. my favourite album of all time is Damage by Jimmy Eat World. its a solid 5 and always has been. but that album gets absolutely slammed on sputnik! but it doesnt matter cause i know what works for me and i know my opinion is no less valuable than anyone else on this site. getting to see things from the perspective of people who have very different experiences and opinions is what makes sites like this so awesome. so yeah, fucking own it man and its awesome that this album connects with you and theres no reason why it shouldnt. i love it when that happens.

@Sniff exactly. Makes my point. Obviously I don't agree but I won't derail the thread by going on about it. I'm still not as excited by this album as I was with Memorial, but I wonder if that's just because Memorial came first. They are so similar; maybe if this came first it would have blown me away.

To me this has the energy that I think Memorial lacked.
