"anyone know if Dan wrote Profanum Vulgus? seems like it"
Nope Dave did. Only 2 songs Dan wrote on this record were Monolithic Ignorance and Cleaving Giants of Ice.

The band seems like a rendition of what Mastodon would sound like if they were a tech-death outfit

I like it about as much as I liked their self titled. While I feel this is tied for their weakest record, I still enjoyed it.

There's about as much exciting riffs as there's fusion shred/wanky/clever maj7 chording bits on this one. Doesn't yet make my balls tickle as some of the previous releases did, but might definitely grow on me. The melodic vocal experiments are interesting and Monolithic Ignorance and Copernican Heresy are really outstanding tracks.
To cover Altar of Sacrifice and not follow it up with Jesus Saves though...

this is pretty alright. they've still got some really cool lines but nothing terribly memorable

it feels safer than my favorites of theirs (namely, Chaos). still waffling but I'm probably gonna 4 it.
