I didn't say it was the only way, I said it was the responsible way. I've read plenty of personal reviews that lead me to some pretty terrible experiences. I'm not saying that I don't have a personal opinion, but I don't let that get in the way of having a professional standpoint when it comes to critiquing an album.
This is why I also stated that there are many ways of critiquing music. This debate is going to fall under the category of "opinions". But I digress, I can appreciate a review that's professional rather than personal.

Didn't I see a post by you on the forums asking on how to delete your account? It's beyond me why you haven't done that yet.

some of the best professional reviews that I've read on here have at least a bit of personal flair to them. I agree with you though that there are many ways to look at reviewing things and sometimes a more traditional approach is the best. I guess I'm not trying to become a professional music reviewer though, especially on this site. I think the one thing we disagree on the most is letting your personal opinion get in the way. In my opinion I feel like as unique individuals our personal opinions are sometimes the most important.
I will say though that the best music reviewers not on this site are usually the more analytical ones, because, well, they are professionals.

but here on sputnik I refuse to take the "professional" stance when rating albums because who cares, they're your ratings.

the notion of a 'professional music reviewer' makes me giggle a bit. just, sitting there and listening to an album PROFESSIONALLY with the serious "lets get to WORK" face makes me laugh. even though I am trying to develop my writing for a professional outing. Also almost every critic is rating/reviewing their albums absed off their own opinion, they just spin it to look like an objective writing piece. Its a tad difficult to rate albums 'objectively'.

Well I've found that Sputnikmusic is less of an echo chamber than most other sites. It's very diverse in it's users, and that's something I can really appreciate.

I agree CL0VER. I listen to music because I enjoy music. But I do see MrGarland's point about professional reviewers specifically

"just, sitting there and listening to an album PROFESSIONALLY with the serious "lets get to WORK" face makes me laugh."
Lol, that's not how I listen to music when I'm trying to obtain a genuine standpoint. There's definitely guilty pleasures I have when it comes to music, plenty of them as a matter a fact. But like I said, I feel like when you're trying to broadcast your opinion to a wide audience, you have to take in account where the music you listen to stands, not where you stand with it. But then again, this isn't The Rolling Stone. hahaha

Well said MrGarland. I 100% agree with your last comment

I'm not really sure I get what you mean with "where the music stands, not where you stand with it" tbh.

People having civil conversations on the internet? What is this sorcery!?

its easier than you think, especially when you DONT make comments like
"People having civil conversations on the internet? What is this sorcery!? "

"I'm not really sure I get what you mean with "where the music stands, not where you stand with it" tbh."
What I've been saying through out this little debate. Judging music not entirely based off your own opinion. (But I believe there's always going to be a little bias, even in the most professional reviews)

Are you being purposely cynical with everything I say?

Where music stands probably means how good it is lyrically, compositionally, and how it relates to other albums within its genre. I can see why people, when reviewing at least, would want to take this standpoint. My writing styles tends to skew towards personal opinion and personal enjoyment however

That doesn't make you any less of a reviewer, either. But I think that people in the big leagues tend to lean towards a more professional route. Not saying that you couldn't make it to the big leagues with personal reviews, because some reviewers are good at gathering a fanbase that will take into account their opinion whether they agree with it or not. Youtube is a fine example of this.

"Are you being purposely cynical with everything I say?"
i... dont think so? i just hate it when people make comments like that, its a reflection that they can't actually have civil conversations most of the time when its super easy to do so.
Also reading your earlier comments, I find myself being in line with what you say, but I think the concepts can go hand in hand for a person trying to actually REVIEW an album instead of just making that "oh wow i love love love this album comment!" on a YouTube page or saying they like some indie pop record that has a few good cuts they listen to exclusively while ignoring all the bad cuts or whatever. if what im saying makes sense.
