Listening to it again today, now I think The Good Son is amazing in context and the weak links are The Heart Knows Better/How Little We Need to be Happy. I have a feeling my opinion on the album is going to change nearly every time I listen to it, it seems.

This is such an excellent but heavy listen. Not sure I want to hear it again any time soon.

Certainly his most emotionally harrowing work, that's for sure.

love david but has anyone jammed dead bees on a cake?

After Alphabet Angel Dead Bees faceplants in quality for me.

still think thalheim is one of the best songs he's ever done. also reminds me of bark psychosis' codename dustsucker.
|

Yeah, Thalheim is one of his best. So smooth in all aspect.

Yes Dead Bees is tied as my favorite Sylvian album ever along with this
|
| |
Also have to disagree with saying that the quality drops off after alphabet angel. wanderlust, darkest dreaming, cafe europa and krishna blue are amazing.

I mean David Sylvian + atmospheric trip-hop = of course some of the best music ever made
I agree, the whole thing is fire. The last two tracks are actually my favorite.
|
| |
i think why people don't like it much maybe because the album is so long. reminds me of peter gabriel's so in some ways.

Yes perhaps. Goes by quick for me but not everyone is into the 90s lounge/ ambient type of music, but thats particularly what I enjoy about that album so much. The chord choices and production choices across the whole thing are constantly beautiful. And as always eloquent poetry being sung all the way through.

The length doesn't help.
The instrumentation and vocal melodies in cafe europa/krishna blue don't do much for me, along with a bunch of songs after Alphabet Angel. Plus a bunch of parts are hookless and don't appeal to me on an songwriting basis, but I do like Wonderlust/Darkest Dreaming.
