Not if the new Leprous album has something to say about it. Or even the new anathema

It would surprise me a great deal if either of those topped this tbh. I'm sure they'll both be good of course

Yeah that's true. I expect Leprous' to be on par with this as a best case scenario just because they change things up every album (though they're not taking as many risks anymore) , but Anathema's I'm expecting to be a 3.5 max.

Leprous are consistent af from what I've heard so it'll probably be a 4. For Anathema, I'm a bit more hopeful than that but it's hard to say. Distant Satellites was one of their weaker records but it still had some really good songs.

Leprous has nothing that is as good as this although to be fair, neither does Fates Warning.
This is their best album.

Not in my book, easily their best (over Pleasant Shade) and on par with Sympathetic Resonance. The sonq writing is so much warmer than their late 80's / early 90's material without sacrificing the musicianship. The production on here is fantastic as well which certainly helps the experience. Not a dull moment here. Plus, The Light and Shade of Things is the best song they ever wrote.
5
and quick edit there Ocean

idk I just don't think it quite has the atmosphere of their classic 80s/90s releases, especially No Exit and Perfect Symmetry. Those albums are just so profoundly and starkly emotional imo and they have a kind of vulnerability that this lacks. The songwriting here is still amazingly good but it's just lacking that special something for me.

I get it ocean dude, and im sure im in the minority here.
Talking about atmosphere, I find this to have many different atmospheres making it so much more diverse whereas those albums are so samey throughout, respectively, and certainly NOT in a negative way. The harmonies and melodies on this are just additional factors that I didn't mention prior as well.
What can i say man, these guys hit a grand slam on this one, for me anyway. And the fact that Darkness has the same overall as this is just a testament to many folks just auto-rating the new fates record, they're obviously on two different levels.
Props to Matheos as I only have four albums at a 5 from the 21st century.....he's got two of them.

Good choice but I think I'd give that to The Ivory Gate of Dreams or maybe Still Remains personally.

idk man that part about 7 and a half minutes in just hits me right in the gut. One of my favourite moments in their whole discography.

it's a great part of the song and one of the highlights of the album for sure......getting to that moment could've been a little more entertaining than it is though imo.....again, still great

It's up there for sure, but Still Remains always comes to mind.
Fucking hell is that a 5 I see?! :O. Didn't you have this at a 3.5 at the very beginning titan? Look at my shitty rating

I love this album but Bilateral is one of the best metal albums ever for me, and I would take TPS over this as well probably. But those two Leprous albums are a whirlwind of innovative ideas and musicianship, especially Bilateral
