Yeah, jeffs first band. It's a 5 in of itself and easily the best ska punk album ever.

I also need to listen to that

@Futures, can't really think of any other recs right now. If you really dig this, their last album, Brainless God, is just as good. and their debut is a blast too. I'd just start with that and both of PUP's LP's

ok so its been quite a few weeks and i've jammed this a good few times (5+) and it's still failing to sink in for me. rn just feel like the lame cliches from overproduced mainstream/stadium rock records that are mixed in with direct hit's classic sound don't end up working at all, like direct hit didn't make the effort to put a spin on them to make them cool which of course just leaves them sounding totally lame. the album is also severely lacking the furious edge (partly blunted by wasted mind's overproduction) that was a huge part of what made brainless god and the band's other releases really compelling despite the fact that direct hit's entire style is a very familiar brand of pop punk. in conclusion just feels weak, cliche and overproduced, in contrast to direct hit's other stuff which is bold, not so unapologetically imitative, and far less indulgent in random irrelevant sounds purposelessly tracked into songs. will totally jam a few more times to see if i finally "get it" but prospects arent looking very good atm.

I definitely hear where you are coming from man, have you checked out their satanic singles album from a few years ago as well? Probably like that more than this new one. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP2OSUfP8Gg

Damn, dimsim haha. I personally thought brainless god was about as poppy as this, but to each their own. as much fun as this album was, PUP's new one is still my choice for pop punk AOTY. That album definitely has more aggression and replay value

i think the over production and "cliche leaning" instrumentation (despite a lot of the instrumentation having strong variety) plays into the satire of the drug themes in this record. So it works well for me.

tbh didnt think new PUP was that good either. like it was still pretty solid (3.7 or 3.8) but i think after the debut i was expecting they'd one up that one and that just didnt happen. tbh all my fave punk bands rn are japanese.

dude, I think this one is actually decent. Like now they made at least a little effort to write something worth while and put some hard work in it. It is still super boring and not that tasteful, but at least they tried. Brainless God is just... Bad.
