i think the reason why thrice stand out is their sincerity and passion. of course their music is not super technical, complex or whatever (also dunno why everyone says like this record is a lot safer than m/m, i think m/m is their safest), but you kinda can always relate to their songs.

Looks like these guys are having fun with their music and don't really care about whether they play some generic rock or proggy stuff like The Window. They do what they want and do it with quality, that's why they are much better than every other rock band these days.

the album is great, although i don't really dig the political side of lyrics.

"Black Honey grooves like Nickelback's Rockstar for sure."

Salt and Shadow is the best track by far.

The rest is a bit too close to generic alt rock.

the only people comparing this to Nickelback are doing so because it has raspy vocals and bluesy parts occasionally when Thrice's last three albums have had these characteristics and have all been very alt-rock in nature

the thing that separates them is, like mentioned, the passion of the music, the songwriting, and the experimentation that Thrice is willing to do

I don't think it has much to do with the rasp or bluesy influences which are not new things. It's more to do with the generic loud/soft verse/chorus structures and very familiar melodies. Major/Minor was a deliberate homage to 90s grunge and alt rock as evidenced by the name of album and interviews given at the time. It was sort of ok for what it was but didn't have the staying power of some of their other releases. This loses most of what was interesting about that album harmonically and has several tracks that straight up sound like they belong on a seether album.

I don't even mind that type of conventional radio rock, but it seems a bit disingenuous to act like the similarities aren't there.

@Itwasthatwas except Thrice had those "similarities" LONG before now.

Go back and listen to All That's Left, Stare at the Sun, Artist in the Ambulance, Image of the Invisible, etc. The "generic structures" and "familiar melodies" you speak of are all there. THIRTEEN YEARS AGO.

The difference between them and conventional radio rock is #1: Thrice does that stuff way the hell better then the rest, and #2: they always experiment with it and expand on it.

Im always curious why people dont like beggars as much as major minor or this. I find its songs more varied ans unique. Wood and wire, in exile, at the last and doublespeak are better than anything or here or m/m. I actually think he sounded alot better vocally on beggars. Too raspy now.

All i know is they destroyed last summer at rockfest. They can still play amazing live.. songwriting is always trickier as time goes by with the same guys

After a long hiatus, I was expecting an in your face comeback. Instead we get a washed down version of Major/Minor. Every now and then bands need to step out of their comfort zone which Thrice have done their past 2 albums. But after dabbling with different sounds, you need to tap back into your roots of what made you the band that everyone knows and loves, and a more aggressive approach would have been so perfect for them. This album is boring and Thrice just going through the motions. Sounds more like a Dustin Kensrue solo effort instead of a Thrice album. Rant over.
