'I turn 38 next year and listening to this album terrifies me that I only have 12 months before my knob falls off'
actually took 24 months and a wedding

Wow, you like this that much? Always found this incredibly average and dispiriting overall - almost exactly not the music MJ should have been concentrating on at that point (though I'd welcome a new low-key The The release now because Matt's arrived at the age he sounded like he already was on this album)
Just watched two films directed by Matt's brother - 'Hyena' (corrupt police officer) and 'Tony' (serial killer), both set in London and Matt provides the music. Have to say in the context of the film's the music is really atmospheric. Enjoyed both films quite a lot too.

I mean, this is better than 90% of music I've heard this year, without a doubt. Songwriting like this is hard to come by; I find that most The The releases are either complete masterpieces, unbelievable instances of musical perfection, and/ or simply terrific. currently I've only listened to this twice, but I can see me 5ing this if I listen to it enough, potentially. that's what happened with me and Dusk.
what I like is when artists flip their own script and are still make something incredible and powerful. people who do this well, I find to be geniuses. And without a doubt this album has some monumental, indescribable musical moments.

But shit dude if I wasn't introduced to this band from your Infected review I don't know if I'd be jamming these guys or if I would have been made aware of them in the same timeframe. I thank you for that

No problem, always stoked to hear anyone is enjoying The The that much.
Don't get me wrong there are three, maybe four, tunes here it would pain me to have removed from my life.
The rest isn't awful, sometimes the lyrics are great on a song, or the atmosphere works, but nothing gels quite like it did on 'Dusk' - and there's another further reduction in vitality I feel compared to the consciously mature and 'already-slowing-down' 'Dusk' (and that's despite the inclusion of a couple jerky out and out rockers at the end of the tracklist)
