I like this, don't mind the cheesiness because its in a self-aware way. Anathema cheesiness is what I can't handle anymore, way too heavy handed.
Album is sweet though probably a high 3.5 so far. Very pleasant to listen to.

Those riffs in 1985 are what Periphery should sound like. Never listened to this band before bc prog's not 3l33t metal enough, but I'm digging it so far.

I liked Earthrise, too. The cheese didn't alienate me on that one, it was just epic and story-like; it reminded me of Coheed to an extent.

Now that you mention it, me too. And I'm not exactly a fan of CAC either.
@zaruyache Listen to The Mountain dude it's epic.

It's alright. There's just a severe dip in songwriting and charisma quality here. I understand the love for this, but I've never usually been one to love this style of prog.

I think this album is overall much better than The Mountain in the ways that actually count. Namely, the songs stick in your head, and you don't fall asleep after the tenth repeat of the album. The Mountain was a finely crafted progressive metal album, it just got so utterly boring after a while, and "Cockroach King" was easily the best track on the album, and there wasn't even anything remotely close to it.

I don't think these songs can get stuck in my head nearly as well as the Mountain. Maybe they have variety but they're not catchy and the lyrics might as well mean nothing.
I did get communist vibes from the lyrics of "Earthrise" which made it even cheesier lol

where the hell did you find communism in Earthrise, Friday?

"One step back two leaps forward" paraphrasing Lenin

Album Rating: 4.0
Hmm, given the popularity of the idiom and the indubitable difference in meaning (Haken go forward, Lenin meant going backwards) I can't agree with you. However, I didn't know about Lenin's specific title, so maybe I'm wrong.

Lenin used the two back and one forward and vice versa depending on his approval or criticism of politics. Anyways, lines like "we are the revolution" are clearly invoking marxist ideas. It doesn't mean they're supporting it, but the imagery is clear.
