It's not as immediate that's for sure, but I didn't like their debut on first listen much either so I'd give it some time. Plus I wanna hear it in good quality

at least the new hop along will be good?
right???????????????

georgia apes frances quinlan on the new one, but she doesn't have the range
|

Schoonda I disagree, I think there's no subtlety whatsoever, and every song is extremely immediate, to a serious fault. It's like literally just a 39 minute long song that isn't that good imo

as if you can't get around UFO lighter or I've Got You? That said there's nothing here that matches West Side Story or Trepidation quality.
I'll admit Georgia needs to learn some new chord progressions though

yea doin it now; up to the third track. ordered the album cuz i've been lovin the title track and the opener for weeks now so couldnt imagine the album would be much of a let down, esp. when i didnt think the debut was that great (pretty good, 7/10, but not that great)

Update us when you're through, really enjoying UFO lighter, Sagan-Indiana I'm not too sure of at the moment

ok update update update: i love it. it's immediately obvious that the songs are samey but im pretty sure thats just cuz all of em have the same production (obviously) and the same instrumental configuration (guitar chords, bass playing melodic line, drums). once you let the songs sit for a while, however, i think you can glean the clear distinctions between them; they all obviously have very different rhythms, melodies, and pacing thru structure, and consequently they all impact me in very different ways. hence i think there's actually a good amount of variety on this record + some seriously beaut melodies and lyrics and ya know like the emooooootion so yea its a pretty great record. happy i ordered the splatter vinyl b4 it sold out (partly why i impulsively went for it was cuz poison city were like "we dont have many copies of the splatter left" and i dug the pre-release tracks and i got faith in this band and the record was $26 AUD which is relatively cheap and i could pair it with a cheeky bennies 7" that was on sale for $5 AUD which is like $4 USD so hell yea i ordered the shit outta dat shit).
one piece of criticism i've got is that the band should figure out more ways to deliver their melodies. the melodies pretty much all come from georgia's vocals and kelly's bass. i think georgia plays freaking zero melodies on her guitar on this record, which is kinda insane (and perhaps a conscious decision?). anyway the problems with delivering all your melodies thru one vocalist or one bassist are coincidentally the same: you can only really get one or two general timbres outta each of them. think about it: unless your singer knows a buncha different vocal techniques, and if the constraints of your band's style allow for the use of those techniques, you're pretty much only gonna get like "kinda normal or soft voice which are basically the same" and "super emotional voice". and with bass, in this kinda genre, you can only rlly play lines that are one note at a time. guitar allows for a bit more variety in this genre cuz you can like add effects or play octaves insteada just one note lines or incorporate different chords and voicings in your melodies etc etc etc. so yea with CC im hopin they figure out how to shake up the melodic delivery with vocals and bass, or start putting some guitar melodies into the songs.
georgia apes frances quinlan on the new one, but she doesn't have the range
im sure georgia's vocals on this record werent directly, consciously influenced by FQ becuz its not like hop along have a freakin patent on female vocalists singin real emotional-like ya know. i mean obviously it sounds similar but you can see how anyone coulda got to singing like that.

Loved the write up dimmy haha, agreed that once you let the songs sit you can start to differentiate them more. Your part about the melodies coming from only GMaq's singing and Kelly's bass is spot on, GMaq will need to start trying to push her guitar work further for the next one.
Fuck yeah dude I'm glad you dig em! Here's some more, the lead singer's energy is insanely good

new album is embarrassing and offensive as hell
|
| |
you're just another straight cis man pretending your opinion matters
|
| |
It's entirely too inert to be offensive or embarrassing.
