That seems extreme. And difficult.

Not a huge 'tones fan, but this was the first release I heard and felt disappointed about.

terrible place to start. try white pony, saturday night wrist or diamond eyes (which is their most accessible)

thats not what I meant, and I get why it came off like that.
I've been buying their stuff since Around the Fur. Never the biggest fan, but I have always respected them and wanted to support them. I felt immediately that Gore was a disappointment on first listen.

A disappointment, yes, but hardly the worst thing ever like some people are making it out to be.

Daimond Eyes and Koi No are among my favorite albums ever so i really have no excuses at this point.
|

Well, this isn't as good as either of those, so that's a bit of an excuse. Still worth checking though

To be fair, its about time Deftones had a disappointment. Their catalogue is absurdly consistent considering how different each album is.

not a bad album but the most generic deftones album to date

This is far from generic and pretty adventurous, the only disappointing aspects are the production and mixing. Might buy it on vinyl, people seem to attest that it sounds better.

^ agreed with everything except the last sentence, w/ which I can't definitively "yay or nay"

i mean generic as far as the deftones sound like they rehashed old sounds & ideas they've used before & it being underwhelming not that adventurous imo but to each their own.i haven't been let down by a album of theirs in a really long time till now.

eh
Deftones are a band that from afar might seem like they're just sort of circling the same sandbox over & over but when you really get into them you see the subtle-to-drastic changes they'll make throughout the albums, and I didn't feel like Gore really stopped that tradition

Yeah like they went a lot lighter on this release to explore more sounds than metal chugging or riffs, while still balancing all that stuff out pretty well. It might not please a lot of their metalhead fans, which if anything makes it even more daring.

i've been listening to deftones since i first heard My Own Summer (Shove It) in '97 tho i'm no longer a fanboy like i was in middle/high school but i will always have admiration for the band.they have always been able to rehash their sound as i put it but at the same time make their next albums sound seem like they were onto something new that's what i always liked about them.but i feel they've already experimented with the sound they're going for on this album & it's blatant.this album reminds me of a combination of Saturday Night Wrist (which is one my favorite albums by them) & also reminds me of chinos side project plams which i also really enjoy.in short this album in very underwhelming to me, i haven't been let down by a album of theirs since the self titled album tho i now have learned to appreciate it.

I like this album but it definitely feels the most complacent of their recent work.

Saw these guys last night, fucking ruled as expected.
However, I noticed that they only played one song from this album (Phantom Bride), while playing like three songs from both DE and Koi. I think it's clear that they don't really like this album too much, which sorta makes me excited for the next one if there will be a next one.
