Songwriting is a bit lacking in places imo, she tries a lot of very cool things but doesn't always manage to connect every idea. But it's still really cool overall. I think Judas and Unconditional Love are my faves.

the middle chunk of the album isn't executed all that well even though there are decent musical ideas present, sort of frustrating.

I'm digging this a lot tho

it's okay background music, otherwise pretty damn boring to actively listen to

idk for me it's the opposite. I like chewing on it way more than passive listens... weird.

none of this is bad stuff, i just feel it's homogeneous. it's sleek and sounds like a million bucks but that same polished production makes it sound kind of whitewashed - too uniform. i had a problem trying to crack d'angelo's last album for the same reasons

honestly not as keen about this as everyone else seems to be. there are brilliant moments but there are also a lot of grating passages that seem like they are unwilling to just completely step into the avantjazz side of things

my favorite moments are when she chills into some groovy soul shit but the moments previously mentioned of discord with grating guitar and overly busy vocal work and shit are just too abrasive to be all that enjoyable and not abrasive enough to be terribly evocative.

Gotta agree with that, it makes the first few tracks hard to sit through but it seems to find its footing at the half-way point.

it would be hard to warrant giving this less than a 3 for me considering it is undeniably technically ambitious and the moments that groove, groove HARD but there is just so much long-winded tension that rarely ends in gratification that i cant rate it any higher than that either

I guess I sorta see where you're coming from Potsy. I find the opener to be pretty experimental, but I feel like it could get away with a couple more risks thrown in there to make things even more interesting.

What do you think of "Judas"? That one especially reminded me of Hiatus Kaiyote melody-wise.
