I used to have rather strong faith, so I think it's interesting from that perspective as well. I agree, though, the religious element is one of the most intriguing things about this album. In part, it's what makes the album so comforting.

thats really interesting man. im inclined to ask what made you lose your faith but you dont have to answer that if ya dont want to.
but yeah its weird how comforting this album is considering how fucking devastating it is haha

Well, to be honest I guess I'm a little more agnostic than most atheists (I dislike this label, but it's technically accurate in this case), but for the most part I just rejected the ideology. If there is a god, I know it's not the one I believed in; I find the arguments rejecting the existence of a god a lot more compelling than for it, too. In short, though, a lot of things happened that made all the questioning a bit too overwhelming to constitute genuine faith in God. That said, I'm going to make an ill-informed judgement that we believe/d in two different religions. It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts, though. If it's too personal for the thread, feel free to shoutbox or just ignore it, but I'm interested as well. :]
If I write a review, I think that'll be the thesis, to be honest. That's the most agreeable statement I've heard about this album.

I'm fine talking about my faith here tbh.
I grew up Lutheran/protestant in general and my parents are pretty religious. But it was always in a way where they seemed to be chill about it yknow. I really love and care for them and I just know if I reject my faith it will be extremely devastating to them. I guess that's one of the many factors holding me back. When I went to college I was reluctant to join a church group because my viewpoints about the world were expanding in a way and a lot of the stuff I was taught about God and the bible seemed hypocritical to me. I ended up joining a Presbyterian church group in college though and it made me realize that Jesus's main teaching in a way is about love and caring for others (very general ik ik). I know this is an easy way out but I really think about sin in a personal way now instead of attempting to generalize sin for everyone. In the end, if there is a heaven it's not up to any of us who gets in and who doesn't so I try not to think about that.
Also, it's a very selfish/weird thing to think but if there is a God and a heaven I don't wanna take the risk yknow. That's another thing I've been struggling with recently. Makes me question why I even bother going to church and praying in general if it's for a "just in case" way. Faith in a religion should be more than that.
and yeah that's where I'm at got very personal but who cares. also write that review man

interesting to see peoples informed views on faith. Personally I'm an atheist, but i do enjoy the religious angle of this album

religious angle works so well because it's so honest and personal. ive noticed people are quick to reject anything musical with a religious angle and it's usually because it seems "preachy" which I totally get. I generally despise christian music. but Julien Baker's lyrics are so perfect man it's not "There is a God" it's "And I think there's a God and he hears either way". beautiful stuff man

Interesting, man. You seem to nonetheless have some sort of conviction in it all, despite the questioning (and I assume there's something beautiful you find in it), so if it works and makes sense to you, I'm sure you're overcome the doubts. And if not, that's cool, too. I guess faith's a pretty personal thing after all. I've always found it so interesting in art, too. To be honest, the thing I like most about Dealer is the religious themes, particularly running through The Magdalene and Night Channels. It captures the feeling beautifully.

"Just waiting for her to put out some new stuff" [2]. You can find a lot of videos of unreleased material being performed online, so I'm hoping there'll be an announcement for something in the next few months. Been listening to Funeral Pyre on repeat.

"religious angle works so well because it's so honest and personal." [2] for sure, especially as she's discussing lots of hardships in her life and then loops it back to how she still has faith despite these things

Sprained Ankle has such a high average on Sputnik, I'm kinda surprised. Wasn't it at a 3.7 or so not too long ago? You should do it, Cormano.

this is alright stuff. I just don't really understand why she's getting so much attention compared to other artists though...
most of my favorite female singer songwriters seems to be like under 10 votes on here lol
