The second album I've listened to from them. Looks like I could become a fan of theirs in the future.

I'd recommend Rust in Peace or Peace Sells next. Those are their 2 "classic" albums. Countdown to Extinction and Endgame are awesome too. The only albums I would say to avoid are Risk (although I actually like it whoops) and Cryptic Writings, those are their most maligned records

Whilst at first i liked the heaviness in regards to its tone, and its declaration of intention and conviction, it quicky wore off as it became evident that the song writing was very generic, derivitive and a complete re-hash of so many old songs. And mostly that mustaine has no new ideas whatsoever when it comes to vocal melodies in verses. Just talk over them basically like he always does in a semi menacing tone.
The Threat is Real reminds me far too much of Kick the Chair.
Fatal Illusion has verses that sound completely the same as Good Morning, Black Friday.
The Emperor's chorus to me sounds very similar to Use the Man.
I dont understand why Megadeth are still going for with this release. There is nothing new here, its all old ideas.
To me this is clear evidence of a band pandering to the notion that if its heavy, its better, regardless of if it actually is better.
The riffs arent inventive, i wish Mustaine would listen to Countdown more, it was a great combination of interesting heavy riffs, but with great interesting melodies. That album also for me was one that transcended the cliche'd metal sound and style, a band that really was a front runner. It felt like it lifted above the realm of 'metal album' and into the realm of musical artist who happen to play metal - not sure if that makes sense. But this album is definitely just a metal album, its not of a band trying to be more than this. A band with new ideas, striving to be a leader, and in doing so a band to be heard as a music fan period, not just as a metal fan.
They arent pioneers anymore, but i guess i just wish Mustaine would push himself to be the pioneer, come up with something but different, unique riffs, arrangements, melodies. Not re-hash of old.
It has its moments dont get me wrong, but they arent better moments than stuff that can be found on previous albums.

I listened to a little bit of Megadeth at one point but I couldn't make it past the first track of this album, Mustaine's vocals just sound way too comical to me.

The second to last paragraph, first line, where the word "that" is, should be "than."
Good review though. I agree with a lot of what you said.
